Want to try a big change without losing the version that already works? CreativeMode saves your mod's history so you can experiment and still go back.
Open your mod and go to Versions & Editing. From there, you can:
Your first completed mod is version 1. Successful Mod Edits and saves from the Texture or Recipe Editor add another version.
Creating an edit does not erase the mod you already have. If the edit fails or you do not like the result, your last working version is still there.
This makes versions useful for trying ideas such as stronger abilities, a new visual style, or a different recipe.
Open Versions & Editing and choose the working version you want to use. Test it again before sharing it or adding it to a modpack.
Going back does not delete the other versions. You can still return to them later.
Porting a Java mod to another Minecraft version creates a separate mod. This keeps both versions available, since they may need different fixes or features.
See Porting Java Mods.
