Soul Blocks

A Soul Block tears a rift open: into the Swift from the Overworld, or home from the Swift. Then it needs the Swift’s Thrive tide to recharge.

Opening a rift

Place a Soul Block and use it. A rift tears open a few blocks past it, facing you. It stays open until no one has gone through it for 30 seconds.

  • In the Overworld it leads into the Swift, to a meadow near the same spot, where a return rift waits.
  • In the Swift it takes you home: back to where the rift you came in through stood, or, if you came by portal, to your spawn point.

Nothing opens in the Nether or the End, while another rift is open within 32 blocks (“A rift is already open nearby.”), or where there’s no room for one past the block. The Soul Block keeps its charge.

Draining and recharging

Opening a rift drains the Soul Block. It goes dim and becomes a Drained Soul Block, which opens nothing: using it only tells you how to recharge it. It stays drained when you mine it and carry it, even into the Swift.

To recharge it, place it in the Swift during the Thrive tide, the Swift’s day. One already placed there recharges as soon as Thrive begins. Like crops, it only recharges while you’re close enough for its area to be loaded. A Soul Block used in the Swift during Thrive doesn’t drain at all.

Getting Soul Blocks

  • Mine them from the pit of an Illager Soul Excavation, or take them from its chest.
  • Take the one on the dais of a Lullaby Circle.
  • Mine them from the Sculker Nest’s dome and the Echo Den’s shrine, and look in the chests of the nest, the den’s illager camp and humbler husks.
  • Defeat an echo golem, a Monarch, a Twisted Warden, the Harmonizer or a Dartback.
  • Craft one: 4 Sifter Scales, 4 Echo Shards and a Soul Lantern. See Crafting.

All of them come charged, including the Soul Blocks already standing in the Swift’s structures.

Other uses

Place a Soul Block on an Echo Totem to bring an echo golem to life. A Drained Soul Block on a totem builds one too, once it recharges in the Swift during Thrive.
