Description:
Ashen Wastes introduces a naturally generated Nether biome defined by its bleak, ashen landscape. Exposed Nether terrain throughout the region is converted to ash during world generation, creating a distinct grey carpet across the ground and walls. Scattered patches of soul soil provide visual and gameplay variety. The biome is hostile: skeletons are the primary threat, and skeleton horses spawn rarely as a rarer encounter and collectible.

The Ashen Wastes generates in the Nether using natural biome placement. Explore the Nether until you see the grey ash terrain. Soul soil patches appear deterministically throughout, mixed in with the ash.
Mine Ash Blocks with a shovel for the fastest harvest. They behave similarly to soul soil in terms of feel and sound, but are grey and have slightly lower strength. Each block drops itself.
Ash Flowers grow in clustered patches of 1 to 5 flowers on top of Ash Blocks — they cannot grow on any other surface. Break them by hand or with any tool to collect them. Important: any living entity that physically touches an Ash Flower while it is placed in the world will be set on fire for 4 seconds. Approach carefully and break from range or at an angle to minimise exposure.
Walking or standing inside an Ash Flower's space ignites the entity for 4 seconds. This applies to the player, hostile mobs, and any other living entity. The effect is triggered server-side, so it is fully applied in survival gameplay. Use ranged attacks or careful positioning to harvest flowers without self-ignition.
During world generation, the mod converts exposed Nether terrain (netherrack, basalt, blackstone, gravel, soul sand, and soul soil) to Ash Blocks wherever those blocks touch open space within the biome. This creates the characteristic ashen appearance across floors, ceilings, and walls. Up to two blocks deep below the surface are also converted. Deterministic soul soil patches replace roughly 10% of ash surface positions, giving the biome natural-looking variety.
Every 60 seconds, the game checks each player standing in the Ashen Wastes biome. There is a 1-in-10 chance per check that a skeleton horse will attempt to spawn within roughly 24 blocks horizontally and 10 blocks vertically of the player. A maximum of 2 skeleton horses may exist within 64 blocks of the player at once, preventing overcrowding.
