Secret Grass Chest

Overview

Secret Grass Chest is a Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5. It adds a single placeable block — the Secret Grass Chest — that is visually indistinguishable from a normal grass block. Hidden inside is a password-protected storage compartment with a massive 81-slot inventory, making it ideal for stashing valuables in plain sight.

What It Adds

The block looks and sounds exactly like a standard grass block. It appears in the Building Blocks creative tab. It counts as a chest item and a storage block for the purposes of sorting or searching your inventory.

How To Use

Placing the Block

Place the Secret Grass Chest anywhere you would place a grass block. It blends seamlessly with surrounding terrain.

Setting a Password (First Use)

1. Right-click the freshly placed block.
2. A "Set Password" pop-up screen appears with a text field.
3. Type your chosen password (up to 32 characters).
4. Click Set Password (or press Enter).

The password is saved permanently with your world. Once a password is set, the chest immediately opens so you can begin storing items.

Note: You cannot submit an empty password — the Submit button does nothing if the field is blank.

Opening the Chest

1. Right-click the block.
2. An "Enter Password" pop-up appears.
3. Type the correct password and click Unlock (or press Enter).
4. If the password matches, the 9×9 inventory grid (81 slots) opens.

Clicking Cancel on either screen closes the pop-up without opening the chest.

Storage Interface

The inventory is arranged in a 9 columns × 9 rows grid — nearly triple the capacity of a standard chest (27 slots) and about one and a half times a double chest (54 slots). Shift-clicking moves items between the chest and your personal inventory as normal.

Abilities And Mechanics

• Perfect disguise — the block uses the same model and grass sounds as a vanilla grass block; there is no visual indicator that it is a chest.
• Password protection — the password is set exactly once when the block is first placed and interacted with. Anyone who right-clicks the block must enter the correct password to open it.
• 81-slot inventory — all stored items are saved with the world and persist through server restarts.
• Range limit — you must be within roughly 8 blocks of the chest to interact with it; the inventory will not stay open if you move too far away.
• Axe-mineable — an axe breaks the block faster, consistent with wooden storage blocks.
• Stackable item — the Secret Grass Chest item stacks up to 64 in your inventory.

Progression And Strategy

• Hide valuables early — craft one as soon as you have a chest, some grass blocks, and a piece of redstone. It is cheap and extremely discreet.
• Password security — choose a memorable but non-obvious password. There is no password-reset mechanism once it is set, so losing the password means losing access to the contents.
• Blend with terrain — place the chest within a grass field or on top of a hill where extra grass blocks are expected; other players have no way to distinguish it from natural terrain without systematically clicking every grass block.
• Massive storage in a small footprint — a single Secret Grass Chest holds as much as three regular chests while occupying only one block, making it efficient for compact, hidden storage rooms.
