Drain Plug
Quickstart
- Craft the Drain Plug block using the recipe below.
- Place it anywhere in the world, ideally near or touching the water or lava you want to deal with.
- Right-click (or interact) on the placed block to open the Drain Plug menu.
- Pick a mode and a radius, then confirm — the fluid (or empty air, depending on mode) in range will instantly change.
- Break the block anytime to pick it back up and reuse it elsewhere.
Overview
Drain Plug is a single utility block that lets you clean up or create bodies of water and lava on demand, without digging trenches, placing glass walls, or manually bucketing fluid block by block. Place the plug, interact with it, choose what you want to happen, and the surrounding area updates instantly.
What It Adds
- Drain Plug block — a placeable, mineable block that opens a control menu when interacted with.
- Multiple fluid modes — drain enclosed pockets of water/lava, drain everything in a radius, or fill enclosed spaces with water/lava.
- Adjustable radius — choose how large an area the plug affects, from small to very large.
How To Use
Place the Drain Plug in or near the fluid you want to affect, then interact with it (use/right-click) to bring up a selection menu:
- Choose a mode: drain an enclosed pocket of water, drain an enclosed pocket of lava, drain water/lava within a radius, or fill an enclosed space with water or lava.
- Choose a radius: available options are 5, 10, 20, 30, or 40 blocks, depending on the mode selected.
- Confirm the menu to run the action. You'll get a chat message telling you how many blocks were changed, or a message explaining why the action couldn't run (for example, if no valid area was found).
Drained fluid becomes empty air — no glass, barriers, or leftover walls are left behind. Filling works the same way in reverse, replacing enclosed empty space with fluid.
The Drain Plug can be broken and picked back up like a normal block, so you can move it to a new location and use it again.
Crafting And Obtaining
Craft the Drain Plug at a crafting table using iron ingots, buckets, and a sticky piston:
Abilities And Mechanics
- Enclosed drain/fill modes work on pockets of fluid or air that are fully bounded by solid blocks, up to a safe volume limit — this keeps the effect contained to the space you intend to clear or flood.
- Radius drain mode clears fluid within a chosen distance of the plug, regardless of whether the area is enclosed, which is useful for open lakes, ponds, or lava flows.
- All modes have built-in safety limits on search distance and volume, so extremely large or unbounded areas will not be processed — if an area is too big or no valid fluid/space is found, the plug will report that the action failed rather than making a partial mess.
- The plug itself is a solid, mineable block that can be placed on top of other blocks and interacted with like a container or machine.
Progression And Strategy
Use the Drain Plug early to quickly clear out flooded caves, ravines, or ocean areas before building. Later, use radius modes to reshape terrain at scale, or use fill modes to create custom lakes, moats, or lava traps for builds and redstone contraptions. Since the block is reusable, keep one in your inventory as a general-purpose terraforming tool whenever you're working near water or lava.
