    Description:

This addon brings dynamic light to Bedrock: wearing any lantern helmet or carrying supported light items (torches, lanterns, glowing items) emits level-15 light, dropped torches/lanterns and lantern helmets illuminate the ground, and burning mobs produce temporary light at night to brighten caves and dark areas. New lantern helmet variants for leather, chainmail, iron, golden, diamond, netherite, and copper can be crafted by combining a matching helmet, a torch, and leather (the copper helmet recipe is included); these helmets keep the same durability, can be enchanted and repaired like normal armor (craft with an unenchanted helmet if you want to avoid losing existing enchantments). To use offhand lighting, sneak-use a supported light item or any item that has the offhand lore message to swap it into your offhand and instantly light your surroundings.

    Mod Wiki

    Dynamic Lantern Helmets

    Quickstart

    1. Open a Crafting Table and combine any helmet + a Torch + Leather to craft the matching Lantern Helmet variant.
    2. Equip the helmet in your head slot — you immediately emit level-15 light around you.
    3. No helmet yet? Hold a torch or lantern in your main hand for the same instant light.
    4. To free up your main hand, sneak + use the torch/lantern to swap it to your offhand — your screen confirms "Equipped light item to offhand."

    Overview

Dynamic Lantern Helmets brings hands-free and hands-on dynamic lighting to Bedrock. Instead of placing torches everywhere, you carry the light with you. Wearing a Lantern Helmet, holding a supported light item, or even dropping torches on the ground all produce real level-15 light that illuminates caves, mines, and dark overworld nights. Burning mobs nearby also flare up as temporary light sources, making encounters feel more dramatic and keeping your surroundings visible.

    What It Adds

Seven new craftable Lantern Helmet variants, one for every armor tier:

    Lantern Chainmail Helmet2165Iron Ingot
    Lantern Iron Helmet2165Iron Ingot
    Lantern Golden Helmet277Gold Ingot

All helmets appear in the Equipment tab of the creative inventory under the Helmet group.

    How To Use

    Wearing a Lantern Helmet

Simply equip any Lantern Helmet in your head armor slot. As long as it is worn, a level-15 light block follows your position and updates every few ticks, keeping you and your surroundings fully lit.

    Holding Light Items

Carrying a torch, lantern, or other supported glowing item in either hand produces the same level-15 light. You do not need a Lantern Helmet for this to work.

    Offhand Lighting

To move a light item to your offhand without opening your inventory:

    • Hold the item in your main hand.
    • Sneak and use (crouch + right-click / crouch + interact).
    • The item swaps to your offhand instantly. An action bar message confirms the swap.

Any item whose tooltip reads "Can be equipped in the offhand." supports this gesture.

    Dropped Items & Burning Mobs

    • Dropped torches and lanterns lying on the ground emit light at their location.
    • Mobs that are on fire produce a temporary light source near them, useful in dark caves during combat.

    Crafting And Obtaining

All Lantern Helmets are crafted at a Crafting Table using a shapeless recipe: the matching helmet + 1 Torch + 1 Leather. Recipes unlock automatically when you have the required materials.

Tip: Use an unenchanted base helmet if you want to preserve existing enchantments — the crafting process consumes the helmet you provide.

    Abilities And Mechanics

    • Light level: All dynamic light sources in this addon operate at level 15 — the maximum, equivalent to a torch placed directly on a block.
    • Light refresh: The light position updates every 4 game ticks, so it tracks your movement smoothly without flicker.
    • Temporary light blocks: The addon places invisible light blocks at your feet/position. These are cleaned up automatically when you move away or remove the light source.
    • Entity scan radius: Burning mobs and dropped light items are detected within 48 blocks of any player.
    • Enchanting: All Lantern Helmets use the armor_head enchanting slot, so Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Protection, and other helmet enchantments apply normally.
    • Repairing: Lantern Helmets can be repaired at an Anvil with their respective material (see the table above).

    Progression And Strategy

Early game — Craft a Lantern Leather Helmet as soon as you have leather, a torch, and a crafting table. It costs almost nothing and immediately eliminates the need to spam torches while mining.

Mid game — Upgrade to Lantern Iron or Lantern Chainmail for better protection without sacrificing your free-hands lighting. Keep a torch or lantern in your offhand as a backup when you switch helmets.

Late game — A Lantern Diamond or Lantern Netherite Helmet gives top-tier armor protection and permanent max-brightness light. Enchant it with Respiration and Protection just like a normal helmet. For nether exploration, the Netherite variant is fire-resistant and keeps you lit in the darkest fortresses.

Combat tip — Burning mobs create light on their own, so in dark encounters you naturally get brief flashes of illumination around enemies — use that visibility window to target them accurately.
