Bound House Key

Quickstart

1. Craft a House Key using one Gold Nugget on top and two Iron Nuggets below it in a crafting grid (see recipe below).
2. Right-click the key while holding it in the air (not on a block) to bind it to yourself. A freshly crafted key is unbound — the first right-click claims it permanently.
3. Walk up to any door and right-click it with your bound key to lock that door to your key.
4. From now on, only you (with that exact key) can open or unlock the door. Anyone else who tries gets a red message and the door won't budge.

No recipe shortcodes are available for this mod, but the crafting shape is: Gold Nugget in the top-center slot, Iron Nugget in the middle-center slot, Iron Nugget in the bottom-center slot — yielding one House Key.

Overview

Bound House Key adds a single craftable item — the House Key — that lets you personally lock any door in the world. Once a key is bound to you, it acts as the sole credential for every door you lock with it. Locked doors resist all interaction: players without the right key, players with empty hands, and even other House Keys are all blocked. Lock data persists with the world so your doors stay locked through server restarts and dimension changes.

How To Use

Claiming (Binding) a Key

A freshly crafted House Key is unbound. Its tooltip reads "Unbound – right-click to claim this key."

• Right-click in the air with an unbound key to bind it to your player account.
• You receive a green confirmation message and the tooltip updates to show your name ("Bound to [your name]").
• A key can only be bound once. If someone else right-clicks an already-bound key, they are told who it belongs to and cannot use it.

Locking a Door

Once your key is bound:

• Right-click any door with your key to lock it.
• You see a gold message confirming the door is now locked to your key.
• The lock is tied to both the door's position and your specific key — not just your player name.

Opening a Locked Door

• Right-click a door that you previously locked while holding your matching key.
• The door opens/closes normally and you see a yellow "Key accepted." message.
• Any other player who right-clicks the door (with or without a key) receives a red "This door is locked by [owner]'s key." message and the door does not respond.

Unlocking (Removing the Lock)

• Sneak + Right-click a door locked by your key to permanently remove the lock.
• You receive a green "Door unlocked." message. The door returns to normal and anyone can open it again.

Breaking a Locked Door

• If a locked door is broken, its lock data is automatically removed. You do not need to unlock it first.

Abilities And Mechanics

• Key uniqueness: Each bound key receives a unique internal ID at the moment it is claimed. Even two keys bound to the same player are treated as different keys — locking a door with one key means only that specific key can open it.
• Ownership stored on the item: The key carries its owner's name and ID on the item stack itself, so you can see who a key belongs to just by hovering over it.
• World-persistent locks: Door lock data is saved with the world. Locks survive server restarts, reloads, and remain per-dimension.
• Lock cleanup: Destroying a locked door automatically clears its lock entry so no orphaned lock data accumulates.
• Wrong key feedback: Attempting to use a key that doesn't match a locked door shows a red "Wrong key. This door belongs to [owner]." message.

Progression And Strategy

• Craft one key per base or building you want to secure. Since each bound key is unique, you can lock different doors with different keys for organized access control.
• Keep your House Key in a safe spot — if you lose it, the doors locked to that key cannot be opened or unlocked without breaking the doors themselves.
• On multiplayer servers, bind your key immediately after crafting to prevent another player from picking it up and claiming it first.
• Because locking and unlocking requires the matching physical key item, consider storing a backup in a chest rather than keeping it on your person in dangerous situations.
