Quickstart

1. Craft a Hunting Knife and bring it along. You can also start a hunt by damaging prey with a sword, axe, trident, bow, or crossbow.

1. Find a sheep, cow, pig, chicken, or other huntable creature. Sheep, cows, pigs, and chickens are skittish and flee from nearby players. Wound a creature with a hunting weapon, then follow the blood marks it leaves as it runs.
2. When you find its carcass, aim at it and hold the use/interact action with the Hunting Knife until the Harvesting progress completes. Stay close and keep holding the knife.
3. Cook raw meat and organs in a furnace before eating them. Raw meat and raw organs can cause poison and weakness.

Overview

The Hunt makes hunting a trail-and-harvest activity. Wounded creatures flee, leaving temporary Blood Trail marks as they run. A creature that dies during a hunt becomes a harvestable carcass instead of dropping its hunting rewards immediately.

Monster-category hostile mobs do not spawn while the mod is active.

What It Adds

• Hunting Knife — a weapon for starting hunts and the tool required to harvest carcasses.
• Tanning Knife and Tanning Rack — process Animal Hide into leather.
• Hunting materials and food — Raw Game Meat, organs, Animal Fat, Animal Hide, Bear Fur, and Bug Wing, plus cooked versions of the meat, organs, and fat.
• Blood Trail and Animal Corpse — temporary trail marks and harvestable carcasses.
• Fishing Trap — gathers fish over time.

How To Use

Hunt and harvest

Hitting an eligible creature with a Hunting Knife, sword, axe, trident, bow, or crossbow marks it as hunted. It flees from the player who wounded it and may leave Blood Trail marks while running on the ground. Marks fade after five minutes, so follow them promptly.

The wounded creature may run a considerable distance. It might disappear, or die and remain as a carcass. Carcasses last up to ten minutes.

To harvest, aim at a carcass and hold the use/interact action with a Hunting Knife until the progress completes. Harvesting takes about four seconds. A block-form Animal Corpse can be harvested the same way.

Most carcasses yield meat, Animal Hide, Raw Brain, Raw Heart, Raw Liver, and Animal Fat. The meat may be the creature’s usual meat or Raw Game Meat. Polar bears and pandas also yield Bear Fur; unsheared sheep also yield wool.

Tan hide

Craft and place a Tanning Rack. Use Animal Hide on the empty rack to hang it. Then aim at the rack and hold the use/interact action with a Tanning Knife until the Tanning Hide progress completes. This takes about 15 seconds and produces one leather. Only one hide can be on the rack at a time.

Place a Fishing Trap and right-click it to collect its catch. It gathers 1–3 fish after a random interval of about 5–20 minutes. It holds up to three item stacks; collect its contents to make room for more.

Abilities And Mechanics

Raw game meat and raw organs cause poison and weakness for 15 seconds when eaten. Cooking these foods removes those effects. Animal Fat can also be cooked.

Progression And Strategy

• Make the Hunting Knife before setting out; other listed weapons can wound prey, but only the Hunting Knife harvests carcasses.
• Keep a clear line of sight to the ground while following a trail, and avoid delaying: blood marks are temporary.
• Bring a Tanning Knife and rack to turn harvested hides into leather.
• Cook raw meat and organs before eating them.
