Mod Wiki
Witches Journal
Quickstart
- Craft a Witches Note using paper, ink sac, and redstone.
- Combine the Witches Note with spider eyes, fermented spider eyes, redstone, and a book to craft the Crimson Offhand Grimoire.
- Equip the Grimoire in your offhand slot.
- Use the offhand item (right-click/trigger use while it's equipped) to cast a spell. Watch the action bar for the spell effect message.
- Switch between Offense and Support spell sets to change what casting does.
Overview
Witches Journal adds a single powerful magic item — the Crimson Offhand Grimoire — that lets you channel blood magic while adventuring. Rather than swinging it as a weapon, you wear it in your offhand and activate it to unleash spells that buff yourself in combat or keep you alive. The Grimoire is built once using a one-time consumable item called the Witches Note, so crafting it takes a bit of preparation before you can wield blood magic freely.
What It Adds
| Item | Description |
|---|
| Witches Note | A one-time crafting component used to bind the Grimoire. Not wearable or usable on its own. |
| Crimson Offhand Grimoire | An offhand-worn spellbook that casts blood magic spells with cooldowns and durability cost. |
Crafting And Obtaining
Witches Note
The Witches Note is the first thing you need to make. It requires paper, ink sac, and redstone.
Crimson Offhand Grimoire
Once you have your Witches Note, combine it with spider eyes, fermented spider eyes, redstone, and a book to create the Grimoire.
The Witches Note is consumed in this recipe, so make sure you have one ready before crafting.
How To Use
- Equip it: The Grimoire goes in your offhand slot. Put it there like you would a shield or totem.
- Cast spells: Activate/use the offhand item to trigger your currently selected spell. Each cast consumes a small amount of the Grimoire's durability and puts that spell on cooldown.
- Switch spell modes: The Grimoire has two modes — Offense and Support — each offering two spells. Switching modes changes which pair of spells you cast.
- Watch cooldowns: Casting has a short global cooldown, and each individual spell also has its own longer cooldown before it can be used again. The action bar will tell you what effect you just triggered.
- Keep it charged: The Grimoire has limited durability. Repair it using ink sacs (restores more durability) or paper (restores a smaller amount) at an anvil or crafting-adjacent repair method.
Abilities And Mechanics
The Grimoire's spells apply short-duration potion-style effects to you:
Offense Mode
- Blood Lance — grants a temporary Strength boost, empowering your held weapon.
- Hexing Curse — grants a temporary Haste boost, speeding up your attacks.
Support Mode
- Warding Rune — grants temporary Resistance, shielding you from damage.
- Vital Pact — grants temporary Regeneration, restoring your health over time.
Each spell has its own cooldown timer (roughly 8–13 seconds) independent of the others, so you can plan when to unleash offense versus support effects. The Grimoire itself also has a shared short cooldown between any cast, preventing spam-casting.
Progression And Strategy
- Craft the Witches Note early since it's required before the Grimoire can ever be made — losing it means starting the process over.
- Use Offense spells when pushing damage in a fight, and swap to Support spells when you need to survive tough encounters or heal up.
- Keep spare ink sacs or paper in your inventory to repair the Grimoire between fights, since it has limited durability and no effect if it breaks.
- Because spells share and stagger cooldowns, alternate between Blood Lance/Hexing Curse or Warding Rune/Vital Pact to keep some effect active at all times rather than waiting on a single spell's long cooldown.
