Quickstart
- Craft a Rapid Test Kit and use it from your hand to check whether you have COVID-19, influenza, or no active infection.
- Use a Protective Mask to gain temporary protection from new infections. It is used like an item, not worn as armor.
- If you become infected, use Antiviral Medicine to clear the infection, or use a Broad-Spectrum Vaccine to clear it and gain protection.
- Find the crafting recipes in Crafting and Obtaining.
Overview
Viral Outbreak adds COVID-19 and influenza infections, along with ways to check for, prevent, and treat them. Infections last up to 20 minutes and cause recurring debuffs. Protection from masks and vaccines also lasts up to 20 minutes.
What It Adds

How To Use
Use items from your hand with the normal Use control:
- Rapid Test Kit: Displays your current infection status. It is not consumed when used.
- Protective Mask: Grants protection, but does not cure an infection you already have.
- Antiviral Medicine: Clears COVID-19 or influenza. If you are not infected, it reports that there is nothing to treat and is not consumed.
- Broad-Spectrum Vaccine: Clears either infection and grants protection, whether or not you are currently sick.
You can become infected when a zombie hits you, with a 12% chance per hit. An infected player can also pass their infection to a player they damage. Protection prevents these new infections.

Abilities And Mechanics
COVID-19 periodically applies Weakness. Influenza periodically applies both Slowness and Hunger. These effects recur while the infection is active; either infection expires after up to 20 minutes.
Masks and vaccines grant the Protected effect for up to 20 minutes. It stops new infections but does not clear an existing illness—use medicine or a vaccine for that.
Progression And Strategy
Keep a Rapid Test Kit handy so you can check your status after exposure. Use a mask before dealing with zombies or an infected player. If a test confirms an infection, use Antiviral Medicine to treat it; choose the vaccine when you also want temporary protection afterward.
