The Murmur

Quickstart

The Murmur spawns naturally at night (and in dark areas) throughout the Overworld, so you'll likely encounter one during normal survival play. When you see it — a gaunt, gray-skinned figure in a brownish-red coat with long disheveled hair and a sad, eyeless face — keep your guard up: it will attack you on sight. Defeat it to collect the Unseting Komodo, a trophy item representing its coat. If you want to spawn one manually, find The Murmur Spawn Egg in the Spawn Eggs creative tab.

Overview

The Murmur is a hostile mob that haunts the Overworld. Resembling a villager in shape but unsettling in every other way, it roams the landscape looking for players and villagers to attack. Its eerie, rumbling sounds — reminiscent of a sniffer — make it easy to hear before you see it. Defeating one rewards you with its signature drop, the Unseting Komodo.

Abilities And Mechanics

Combat behaviour

• The Murmur attacks with melee strikes and will pursue targets relentlessly within a 32-block detection range.
• It targets players and villagers on sight, and will also retaliate if hurt by any other source.
• It swims rather than drowning, so bodies of water won't stop it.

Stats

Sounds The Murmur uses deep, resonant sniffer-like sounds for its idle, hurt, death, and footstep audio — making it atmospherically distinct despite its villager-like silhouette.

Spawning

• Spawns in monster spawn groups of 1–3 anywhere in the Overworld.
• Will despawn if it wanders more than 128 blocks away from any player, but otherwise persists in the world.
• On death it awards 5 experience points.

Crafting And Obtaining

The Murmur has no crafting recipes. Its content is obtained through exploration and combat:

• The Murmur — Spawns naturally throughout the Overworld. Can also be spawned with The Murmur Spawn Egg (available in the Spawn Eggs creative tab, or via /give).
• Unseting Komodo — Dropped by The Murmur every time it is killed. One is guaranteed per kill.

Progression And Strategy

• The Murmur's 32-block detection range means it can spot you from a distance, so listen for its sniffer-like rumbles as an early warning.
• With 12 hearts of health and 2-heart hits, unarmored players should be careful — approach with at least iron armor and a sword.
• Villagers are also valid targets, so if you live near a village, expect The Murmur to cause problems. Consider patrolling or lighting up the surrounding area.
• The Unseting Komodo is a trophy item with no crafting use — collect it as a memento of your encounter or display it in an item frame.
