Description
Swing across Minecraft with a grappling hook whose rope fires from your hand.
Mod Wiki
Swinghook Grapple
Quickstart
- Craft the Grappling Hook using iron ingots, string, and a lead (see recipe below).
- Hold it in your main hand (or off-hand) and right-click to fire the hook toward wherever your crosshair is pointed.
- If the hook latches onto a block or surface, you'll start swinging or being pulled toward it. Use your movement keys (WASD) and jump to steer your swing, and sneak to control descent/rappel.
- Right-click again (or release the use key if firing from the off-hand) to detach and get a boosted jump off the rope — great for chaining swings across gaps or climbing structures.
- Try firing at a cliff face, a tree, or the ceiling of a cave and swinging across a ravine to get a feel for the momentum.
Overview
Swinghook Grapple adds a single new tool — the Grappling Hook — that lets you fire a rope from your hand, latch onto terrain, and swing, climb, or rappel through the world like an action-movie hero. It's built for fast traversal: crossing canyons, scaling cliffs, escaping mobs, or just zipping around your base.
What It Adds
- Grappling Hook — a throwable, reusable tool item with limited durability.
- A rope/hook projectile that flies from your hand, sticks to solid blocks, and pulls or swings you toward the anchor point.
- Custom swinging, climbing, and rappelling animations for your character while attached to the rope.
- Fall damage protection immediately after releasing the hook, so a swing-to-drop doesn't punish you for the landing.
Crafting And Obtaining
The Grappling Hook is crafted with iron ingots, string, and a vanilla lead:

It has limited durability and takes a small amount of damage each time it's thrown, so keep spare iron and string on hand if you plan to grapple often.
How To Use
- Throwing: Right-click while holding the hook to fire it in the direction you're aiming. It travels in a straight shot toward your crosshair, up to a fairly long range.
- Latching: If the hook hits a solid block, it sticks there and a rope connects it to your hand. If it misses, it flies for a short time before falling away on its own.
- Retracting/Releasing: Right-click again with the hook to let go early. This gives you a small boost, similar to jumping off a swing at just the right moment.
- Main-hand vs off-hand:
- In the main hand, holding right-click keeps the hook active continuously — release the mouse button to detach with a jump boost.
- In the off-hand, the hook stays latched as long as you hold right-click, and detaches with a boost when you release it. This lets you keep your main hand free for a sword or tool while swinging.
- Steering while swinging: Use forward/back/strafe movement keys to add swinging momentum in a direction, letting you build up speed for longer arcs.
- Rappelling down: Hold sneak while hanging from the rope to lower yourself in a controlled descent instead of swinging wildly.
- Pulling in: Standing mostly still while attached pulls you steadily toward the anchor point, useful for climbing straight up a cliff or wall.
- Only one hook can be active per player at a time — firing again while one is out will retract the existing one first.
Abilities And Mechanics
- Rope physics: The rope has a maximum extension length; if you drift too far past it, the hook automatically releases you cleanly instead of yanking or destroying the connection.
- Fall protection: Immediately after detaching from the hook, you get brief protection from fall damage, making swing-and-drop maneuvers safer.
- Visual feedback: Your character visibly leans, arcs, and reacts to rope tension while swinging, climbing, or rappelling — this is purely cosmetic and doesn't affect movement.
- Sound cues: Throwing and releasing the hook both play distinct sound effects so you can tell at a glance (or by ear) when you've latched on or let go.
- Durability: Each throw costs a small amount of durability; a fully worn hook will break, so watch its damage bar during heavy use.
Progression And Strategy
- Use the grapple to skip long detours around canyons, ravines, and cliffs instead of building bridges or stairs.
- Combine swinging momentum with a well-timed release to launch yourself much farther than a normal jump — useful for crossing wide gaps.
- Keep the hook in your off-hand if you want to fight or mine while still being able to grapple away from danger at a moment's notice.
- Because durability is limited, keep spare crafting materials (iron ingots, string, and leads from cows and pillager outposts) in your inventory for repairs and replacements on long expeditions.
