Lock And Key
Quickstart
- Get a Chest Key (via creative inventory search or a command block/loot table, since there is no crafting recipe for it).
- Hold the Chest Key and use it (right-click / interact) on any chest, trapped chest, or copper chest.
- The chest becomes locked and the key becomes permanently bound to that one chest.
- To open the chest later, hold the same bound key and interact with the chest again — it unlocks and the key crumbles away, becoming reusable inventory space.
Overview
Lock And Key lets you secure storage containers so only the holder of a matching key can open them. Once locked, a chest cannot be opened, looted, broken (in Survival), or destroyed by explosions except by the person holding its exact key. This is great for protecting valuables in shared worlds, adventure maps, or vaults.
What It Adds
- Chest Key — a simple, stackless item used to lock and unlock containers.
- Locking support for:
- Chests
- Trapped Chests
- Copper Chests (all oxidation stages: exposed, weathered, oxidized)
- Waxed Copper Chests (all waxed oxidation stages)
- A padlock effect and sound cues when locking/unlocking a chest.
- Protection against breaking or exploding locked chests.
How To Use
- Locking a chest: Hold a fresh (unbound) Chest Key and interact with any supported chest. The chest locks instantly, and your key becomes uniquely bound to that chest — its lore will note it's "Bound to a locked chest."
- Unlocking a chest: Interact with the locked chest while holding its bound key. The chest unlocks, plays an unlocking sound, and the key is consumed (crumbles away) in the process.
- Wrong key or no key: If you interact with a locked chest without holding its matching key, the chest stays locked and an on-screen message lets you know it can't be opened.
- Double chests: Locking one half of a double chest locks the entire chest — both sides share the same lock and key.
Abilities And Mechanics
- Survival protection: Locked chests cannot be broken by players in Survival mode. Attempting to break one displays a warning and cancels the break.
- Creative removal: Players in Creative mode can break locked chests, which also removes the lock entirely — useful for map building and cleanup.
- Explosion-proof: Locked chests are automatically excluded from explosion damage, so TNT and other blasts won't destroy them or drop their protected contents.
- One key, one chest: Each Chest Key can only ever be bound to a single chest. Once bound, it cannot be reused to lock a different container.
- Copper aging safe: Locks remain valid on copper chests even as they naturally weather from one oxidation stage to another, and whether or not they've been waxed.
Progression And Strategy
- Keep unbound Chest Keys on hand before you plan to lock storage — you can't lock a chest without a fresh key.
- Store your bound keys carefully; losing one means the chest stays locked until you either find its key or switch to Creative mode to break it open.
- Use locked chests to safeguard shared bases, secure loot rooms in adventure maps, or create key-gated puzzle chests for other players to solve.
