Description:
Life Retriever adds a craftable device that lets you convert some of your permanent hearts into portable Permanent Heart items. Right-clicking the Life Retriever opens a simple slider GUI to choose how many hearts to store (always leaving at least one), creating items you can carry, trade, or stash; right-clicking a Permanent Heart consumes it to restore one permanent heart and gives a small immediate heal. Your permanent heart total is saved, automatically reapplied on spawn and world load, and periodically synchronized so backed-up hearts persist across deaths and sessions.
Mod Wiki
Life Retriever
Quickstart
- Craft a Life Retriever at a crafting table:
- Hold the Life Retriever and use it (right-click / tap the use button) to open the slider GUI.
- Drag the slider to choose how many permanent hearts to store, then confirm. You will receive that many Permanent Heart items and your maximum health will decrease accordingly.
- To get a heart back, hold a Permanent Heart item and use it. It is consumed instantly, restoring one permanent heart and healing you by one heart.
Overview
Life Retriever lets you treat your maximum health as a resource. You can withdraw permanent hearts into physical items, carry them in your inventory, store them in chests, or hand them to other players — then reclaim them whenever you like. Your heart total is saved persistently and restored automatically every time you spawn or load the world, so hearts you have banked are never lost on death.
What It Adds
| Item | Description |
|---|
| Life Retriever | A handheld device used to convert permanent hearts into items. Found in the Equipment tab. |
| Permanent Heart | A portable heart item created by the Life Retriever. Using one restores a permanent heart. Found in the Items tab. |
How To Use
Withdrawing Hearts (Life Retriever)
- Hold the Life Retriever and use it.
- A screen titled "Life Retriever" appears showing your current permanent heart count and a slider.
- Set the slider to the number of hearts you want to store (minimum 1, up to all but your last heart).
- Confirm to receive that number of Permanent Heart items. Your maximum health drops immediately.
- You will always keep at least 1 permanent heart — the device prevents you from storing your last one.
Depositing Hearts (Permanent Heart)
- Hold a Permanent Heart item and use it.
- The item is consumed, your permanent heart total increases by 1, and you are healed by 1 heart right away.
- You can use them one at a time from your hotbar or inventory.
Abilities And Mechanics
- Maximum hearts: Players start with the standard 10 hearts. The minimum is 1 heart; the maximum is 40 hearts.
- Bonus hearts above 10 are applied via a hidden Health Boost effect, so your health bar grows beyond the default range.
- Persistence: Your permanent heart total is stored with your player data. It is reapplied automatically on spawn, on world load, and every two seconds while you are online, so dying never resets your heart count.
- Immediate heal on deposit: Using a Permanent Heart heals 1 heart (2 HP) on top of raising your maximum, giving a small but handy burst of health in a pinch.
- Tradeable: Permanent Heart items sit in your inventory like any other item and can be placed in chests, traded with other players, or saved for later.
Progression And Strategy
- Bank hearts before a risky venture. Store some permanent hearts in a chest before fighting a boss or exploring a dangerous area. If you die, your heart count is unchanged — and your stashed hearts are waiting for you.
- Trade with other players. Permanent Hearts can be given to teammates, making cooperative heart-sharing possible on multiplayer worlds.
- Gradual accumulation. You cannot exceed 40 permanent hearts, so plan your storage and restoration carefully if you are managing a large pool.
- Emergency use. Keeping a few Permanent Hearts on your hotbar lets you top up both your max health and your current health mid-fight.
