Description

The Ice Flower is a powerful magical item that lets you shoot bouncing ice balls at enemies. Right-clicking fires a projectile that bounces along the ground and surfaces before hitting a mob, instantly freezing it solid for 10 seconds -- completely immobilizing it and preventing it from moving, attacking, or mining. When the freeze wears off, most regular mobs (zombies, skeletons, creepers, etc.) are killed instantly. Tougher bosses like the Warden or Ender Dragon require 10 ice ball hits while frozen before they can be defeated -- hitting them fewer than 10 times deals significant damage instead. A short cooldown of about 0.75 seconds between shots keeps the power balanced while still allowing fast-paced combat.

Ice Flower

Quickstart

  1. Craft the Ice Flower using the recipe below and hold it in your hand.
  2. Right-click to fire a bouncing ice ball at any enemy.
  3. Watch it ricochet along the ground until it strikes a mob — the mob freezes solid for 10 seconds.
  4. After the freeze expires, most mobs die instantly. Hit bosses repeatedly while frozen to bring them down.

Overview

The Ice Flower is a single magical item that transforms combat into a freeze-and-finish affair. Fire bouncing ice balls that roll and skip across surfaces, sticking to anything they hit and locking it in place. It's effective against everyday hostile mobs and, with patience, powerful enough to topple even the toughest bosses in the game.

What It Adds

ItemDescription
Ice FlowerA reusable ranged weapon that fires bouncing ice ball projectiles. Stackable only to 1. Has an enchantment glint. Found in the Combat item group.

How To Use

  • Right-click (use) while holding the Ice Flower to launch an ice ball in the direction you are facing.
  • The ice ball is affected by gravity and bounces off surfaces — floors, walls, and ceilings — up to 30 times before disappearing. It travels in a low arc and skips along the ground, similar to a Mario-style ice ball.
  • If the ice ball doesn't hit anything within 10 seconds, it disappears on its own.
  • A ~0.75-second cooldown is applied after each shot before you can fire again.
  • A sound plays when you fire.

Abilities And Mechanics

Freezing

When the ice ball strikes a living entity it freezes the target for 10 seconds. While frozen:

  • The mob is visually covered in ice.
  • Movement, attacks, and mining are completely disabled.
  • AI is turned off for mob entities — they cannot react or retaliate.

What Happens When the Freeze Ends

The outcome depends on how powerful the mob is:

Mob TypeConditionResult
Normal mobs (zombies, skeletons, creepers, etc.)Any number of hitsInstantly killed when the 10-second freeze expires
Powerful bosses (Warden, Ender Dragon, etc.)10 or more ice ball hits while frozenInstantly killed when the freeze expires
Powerful bossesFewer than 10 hits while frozenTakes 10% of their max HP per hit as damage; survives if not killed

Bosses are defined internally as mobs with more than 100 max health points.

Hitting a Frozen Boss Multiple Times

You can fire additional ice balls at a frozen boss to rack up hits before the 10 seconds are up. Each new ice ball that connects increments the hit counter. Reach 10 hits and the boss is eliminated the moment the freeze expires. Fall short, and each hit still deals meaningful damage.

Crafting And Obtaining

The Ice Flower recipe is unlocked automatically when you join a world.

Arrange Ice blocks, a Snowball, and a Blaze Rod in a cross pattern on the crafting table. You receive one Ice Flower.

Progression And Strategy

  • Early game: The Ice Flower is accessible as soon as you can acquire a Blaze Rod from the Nether, making it a mid-game power spike that trivialises most overworld mobs.
  • Crowd control: Because frozen mobs are completely immobilised, you can freeze one enemy, deal with others, then return before the freeze wears off.
  • Boss fights: Enter a boss fight with a full hotbar readiness to spam ice balls. You have ~0.75 seconds between shots and 10 seconds of freeze time — that's enough time to land 10+ hits comfortably. Time your approach to maximise hits before the freeze expires.
  • Terrain awareness: Ice balls bounce off walls and floors, so tight corridors can actually work in your favour by keeping the projectile bouncing toward a target. In open arenas, aim slightly low to use the ground as a ricochet surface.
  • The Ice Flower is not consumed — it is a permanent tool you keep indefinitely.
