Description
This mod adds a craftable Fireball Staff—complete with its own inventory icon, held pose, durability, recipe, and creative-category slot—that you can equip and use in normal survival (use/right-click to fire). Firing launches a custom staff_fire_bullet: a small 3D blazing fireball with a flame/lava particle trail, a short cooldown, and on-impact effects that cause an instant explosion and set blocks on fire while respecting game rules for block damage. The projectile now uses a much lighter gravity and disables normal physics gravity so it follows a longer, gentler arc for lobbed shots and more predictable ranged play, keeping the staff powerful but balanced by durability and cooldown.
Mod Wiki
Fireball Staff
Quickstart
- Gather a Fire Charge, a Blaze Rod, and a Stick.
- Craft the Fireball Staff at a crafting table:
- Hold the staff in your hand and use (right-click / tap the use button) to fire a blazing fireball.
- Watch for the flame and lava particle trail — aim slightly low to account for the gentle arc, then enjoy the explosion on impact.
Overview
The Fireball Staff is a ranged weapon that lets you lob explosive fireballs at enemies and terrain. Each shot spawns a glowing 3D fireball projectile that travels on a slow, arcing path, detonates on impact, and can ignite surrounding blocks. It is balanced by a cooldown between shots and a finite durability, making it a powerful but measured tool for combat or demolition.
What It Adds
| Content | Description |
|---|
| Fireball Staff | A hand-held ranged weapon found in the Equipment tab of the creative inventory. Craftable in survival. |
| Staff Fire Bullet | The custom fireball projectile launched by the staff. It is not obtainable on its own — it exists only while in flight. |
How To Use
- Firing: Hold the Fireball Staff and press Use (right-click on Java-style controls, or the on-screen Use button on touch). A fireball launches from in front of your face in the direction you are looking.
- Cooldown: After each shot there is a brief cooldown (about 0.6 seconds / 12 game ticks) before the staff can fire again. Spamming the button during the cooldown does nothing.
- Aiming: The projectile follows a long, gentle arc rather than flying in a perfectly straight line. Aim slightly above distant targets to compensate for the drop.
Abilities And Mechanics
The Staff Fire Bullet
- Particle trail: Flames and lava particles stream from the projectile throughout its flight, making it easy to track.
- Impact damage: Deals 6 damage to any entity it directly strikes, with knockback.
- Explosion on hit: The projectile detonates instantly on contact with any surface or entity (explosion power 2 — comparable to a small TNT blast).
- Fire spreading: The explosion ignites nearby blocks. Whether the fire actually spreads and whether blocks are destroyed depends on your world's Fire Spread and Mob Griefing game rules — the staff respects those settings.
- Sound: Fires with a Blaze shooting sound for satisfying feedback.
Durability
The Fireball Staff has 256 durability. Each shot consumes exactly 1 durability. At 256 shots the staff breaks and disappears, so plan your ammo accordingly. It cannot be repaired with an anvil (no repair material is defined), so craft a replacement when it wears out.
Crafting And Obtaining
The staff appears in the Equipment category of the creative inventory. In survival, craft it at a crafting table:
| Ingredient | Source |
|---|
| Fire Charge | Crafted from blaze powder, coal, and gunpowder; or found in chests |
| Blaze Rod | Dropped by Blazes in the Nether |
| Stick | Crafted from planks |
Progression And Strategy
- Early game caution: Getting a Blaze Rod requires venturing into a Nether fortress, so the staff is a mid-game reward rather than a starter weapon.
- Crowd control: The explosion and knockback combination makes the staff excellent for clearing groups of mobs. Position yourself on high ground to take advantage of the arcing trajectory.
- Griefing rules: If you want explosive terrain destruction, make sure the Mob Griefing game rule is enabled (
/gamerule mobGriefing true). With it off, the explosion creates no block damage but still harms entities — useful for mob arenas where you want to preserve your build.
- Conservation: With 256 shots per staff, avoid firing casually at single targets you could reach with a sword. Save the staff for tough fights, swarms, or strategic demolition.
- Multiple staves: You can carry several crafted staves and swap between them to extend your effective shot count during long expeditions.
