Elder Happy Ghast
Quickstart
- Find an Elder Ghast Spawn Egg in the Creative inventory, or summon one with:
/summon com_elder_happy_ghast_5qozhgdi:myhappy_ghast
- Spawn the Elder Ghast in an open area. It floats in the air and does not fall.
- For a baby Elder Ghast, hold a snowball and interact with it to help it grow.
- To ride an adult, hold any colored harness and interact with the unharnessed Elder Ghast.
- Interact with the harnessed Elder Ghast to mount it. Up to four players can ride at once.
- Use normal movement controls while riding to guide it. Hold shears and interact while no one is riding to remove the harness.
Overview
The Elder Ghast is a large, gentle flying mob with a 4-block-wide and 4-block-tall collision area. Adults have 75 health and can carry players after being equipped with a harness.
Elder Ghasts can be named, leashed, ridden, and kept as aerial companions. They do not take fall damage, but lava damages them.

How To Use
Finding and Spawning
Elder Ghasts can naturally spawn in the air in:
- Plains
- Sunflower Plains
- Forest
- Flower Forest
- Birch Forest
- Old-Growth Birch Forest
- Meadow
- Cherry Grove
They spawn in bright conditions and usually appear alone or in groups of up to two. Most natural spawns are adults, though babies can also appear.
For immediate testing, use the spawn egg or the /summon command from Quickstart.
Naming and Leashing
Use a name tag to give an Elder Ghast a custom name. Elder Ghasts can also be attached to a lead, allowing you to keep one near a base or building.
Harnessing
An adult Elder Ghast must be unharnessed before you can equip it.
- Hold a colored harness.
- Interact with the adult Elder Ghast.
- The harness is equipped and the Elder Ghast becomes rideable.
Available harness colors include black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue, light gray, lime, magenta, orange, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow.
Riding
Interact with a harnessed Elder Ghast to ride it. The adult has four passenger seats, so several players can travel together.
While riding:
- Use movement controls to steer.
- Forward movement works normally.
- Backward movement is slower.
- Strafing is supported.
- Dismounting places riders on top of the Elder Ghast.
An adult may stop moving when a living player is positioned directly above it, making it easier to approach and interact with.
Removing a Harness
To remove the harness:
- Make sure the Elder Ghast has no riders.
- Hold shears.
- Interact with the Elder Ghast.
The shears lose durability when used, and the harness drops after removal.
Crafting And Obtaining
There are no custom crafting recipes for this mod.
Obtain an Elder Ghast through one of these methods:
- Find one naturally in a suitable bright biome.
- Use the Elder Ghast Spawn Egg from the Creative inventory.
- Use
/summon com_elder_happy_ghast_5qozhgdi:myhappy_ghast.
Harnesses and snowballs are used with the Elder Ghast but are not added by this mod.
Abilities And Mechanics
Flight and Movement
Elder Ghasts float and fly without gravity. Adults wander through the air, while babies hover and move more actively.
They can travel over water, but adults avoid entering water. Falling does not damage them.
Baby Elder Ghasts
Baby Elder Ghasts are much smaller and have 75 health. They can:
- Follow nearby players and many friendly mobs.
- Be attracted with snowballs.
- Be fed snowballs to help them grow.
- Grow into adults over time.
Keep a baby near the companions or animals you want it to follow, and use snowballs to encourage it to stay close.
Damage and Survival
Elder Ghasts are sturdy, with 75 health in both baby and adult forms.
- Fall damage does not affect them.
- Lava deals 4 damage per tick.
- Adults can become resistant to being pushed while in certain stationary states.
Drops
When an Elder Ghast is defeated, it drops:
- 1–3 white wool, with Looting potentially increasing the amount.
- A ghast tear has a 20% chance to drop when the Elder Ghast is killed by a player. Looting can slightly improve this chance.
- 1–3 experience points when the final hit is dealt by a player.
Progression And Strategy
- Use the spawn egg first to test the Elder Ghast in a large, open space.
- Raise a baby with snowballs if you want to watch it grow and follow you.
- Equip a harness before attempting to ride an adult.
- Build a high, open landing area so the Elder Ghast has room to hover and turn.
- Use different harness colors to organize multiple Elder Ghasts.
- Keep lava away from enclosures, since Elder Ghasts take continuous damage from it.
- Leash or name-tag an Elder Ghast near your base to make it easier to identify and keep track of.
