Dye Lit Lanterns

Quickstart

1. Craft a Handheld Torch or Handheld Lantern at a crafting table using a single vanilla torch or lantern — no dye needed.
2. Put the item in your main hand or offhand.
3. Light follows you automatically — no placing required. A colored label appears on your action bar confirming the light is active.
4. To try a colored variant, combine any torch or lantern with a dye at a crafting table. All recipes are shapeless and appear in the recipe book once you have the ingredients.

Overview

Dye Lit Lanterns turns torches and lanterns into mobile light sources. Instead of stopping to place torches on walls, simply hold one and a full-brightness light block tracks your position as you move. This works with vanilla torches, soul torches, lanterns, and soul lanterns, as well as all 36 new handheld items added by this mod. Every new item can be held in the offhand so your main hand stays free for tools or weapons.

What It Adds

Base handheld items (no dye required):

• Handheld Lantern

Colored torches (16 dye colors): White, Orange, Magenta, Light Blue, Yellow, Lime, Pink, Gray, Light Gray, Cyan, Purple, Blue, Brown, Green, Red, Black

Colored lanterns (16 dye colors): Same 16 color variants as torches.

All colored torches can also be used as furnace fuel (same burn value as a standard torch).

How To Use

• Equip any handheld torch, handheld lantern, or colored variant in your main hand or offhand.
• A maximum-brightness light block is placed at your feet and moves with you every few ticks.
• Your action bar shows the active light color name (e.g., Cyan held light).
• Switching or dropping the item immediately removes the traveling light.
• You can hold a light item in the offhand while using any tool or weapon in your main hand — ideal for mining and combat.
• Vanilla torches, soul torches, lanterns, and soul lanterns also trigger the traveling light effect when held, with no crafting needed.

Crafting And Obtaining

All recipes are shapeless and are crafted at a crafting table. Recipes unlock automatically in the recipe book when you have the required ingredients.

Abilities And Mechanics

The light block tracks your position just above your feet. If that position is occupied by a solid block (e.g., you are inside a block or swimming), the light will not place until an air block is available — so light may briefly disappear in tight spaces.

Progression And Strategy

• Early game: Craft a Handheld Torch as soon as you have a torch. Drop it in your offhand and mine freely without ever stopping to place torches.
• Combat: Put a light item in your offhand so hostile mobs cannot spawn around you while you fight with your main hand.
• Night travel: Keep a lantern in your offhand during surface travel — lanterns are brighter-looking and make a good aesthetic companion to night journeys.
• Color coding: Use different colored torches or lanterns as visual signals — for example, Red Torch near dangerous drops, Green Torch near your base entrance — while still benefiting from the traveling light effect.
• Multiplayer: Each player has their own independent traveling light, so the whole group stays lit without coordinating torch placement.
