Butterfly Allay
Quickstart
- Install the add-on and load a world with it enabled.
- Find a Butterfly Allay spawning naturally in flower forests, plains, sunflower plains, meadows, lush caves, forests, or birch forests — or use the Butterfly Allay Spawn Egg to summon one instantly.
- Hold an item in your hand and interact with the Butterfly Allay to give it that item. It will then fly off to collect matching items from the world and bring them back to you.
- Interact with it again (without an item in hand) to retrieve what it is holding.
Overview
The Butterfly Allay is a graceful, butterfly-winged variant of the classic Allay. It floats through flower-rich biomes with delicate, fluttering movements, hovers near flowers, and performs spontaneous aerial dances. While its appearance is more elegant than a standard Allay, it retains the same core helpfulness — seeking out and collecting items on your behalf.
What It Adds
| Content | Description |
|---|
| Butterfly Allay | A flying, item-collecting mob with colorful butterfly wings and gentle aerial behavior |
| Butterfly Allay Spawn Egg | Lavender and pink egg used to spawn a Butterfly Allay manually |
How To Use
Item Collection
The Butterfly Allay works just like a standard Allay for item collection:
- Give it an item by interacting with it while holding that item. It will search the surrounding area (up to 32 blocks away) for matching items and bring them back.
- Retrieve its held item by interacting with it while your hand is empty.
- It can only hold one type of item at a time and will not pick up items that don't match what it's been given.
Leashing
You can attach a lead to the Butterfly Allay to keep it close to a specific location, such as near a chest or sorting area, making it a reliable stationary collector.
Naming
Use a name tag to give your Butterfly Allay a custom name, which will display above it.
Balloon
You can attach a balloon to the Butterfly Allay.
Abilities And Mechanics
Butterfly Behaviors
Beyond item collection, the Butterfly Allay exhibits several natural behaviors:
- Flower Hovering — It will drift toward nearby flowers and linger around them for a few seconds before moving on.
- Aerial Dancing — Periodically, it breaks into a graceful hovering dance, rising and swooping gently through the air. This dance plays out fully before it returns to its normal routines.
- Fluttering Flight — It navigates by hovering, naturally avoiding water and hazardous blocks. It has no gravity and floats freely at all times.
Combat & Survival
- The Butterfly Allay has 20 health points (10 hearts).
- It takes damage from lava but is immune to accidental hits from its owner.
- It panics and flees when threatened.
- It does not retaliate against attackers.
Natural Spawning
Butterfly Allays spawn in small groups of 1–3 in well-lit, open areas of the following biomes:
- Flower Forest
- Plains & Sunflower Plains
- Meadow
- Forest & Birch Forest
- Lush Caves
They appear only after a world has been active for a while and will not spawn during adverse weather or in low light.
Drops
When a Butterfly Allay is killed, it drops the following:
| Drop | Amount | Notes |
|---|
| Glowstone Dust | 1–2 | Always drops; Looting increases by 0–1 |
| Blue Orchid | 1 | Common flower drop (60% chance from flower pool) |
| Dandelion | 1 | Less common flower drop (40% chance from flower pool) |
| Feather | 1–2 | Always drops; Looting increases by 0–1 |
| Amethyst Shard | 0–1 | 25% chance; Looting increases odds |
| Phantom Membrane | 0–1 | Rare (8% chance); player kills only; Looting increases odds |
| Bottle o' Enchanting | 1 | 15% chance; player kills only; Looting increases odds |
Using a Looting-enchanted sword increases the chances and quantities of most rare drops.
Progression And Strategy
- Early game: Seek out a Butterfly Allay in a flower forest or meadow biome. Hand it a common item like seeds or flowers to begin automating basic collection.
- Mid game: Leash Butterfly Allays near note blocks (note blocks cause nearby Allays to drop collected items, just as with vanilla Allays) for a simple item-sorting setup.
- Farming drops: If you need phantom membranes or bottles o' enchanting, the Butterfly Allay is a passive source. Bring a Looting III sword to maximize your haul — the rare drop chances scale significantly with Looting level.
- Multiple Allays: Since up to three can spawn together naturally, you can collect a small group and assign each a different item to collect, building a lightweight multi-item gathering system.
