The Taskmaster

Quickstart

The Taskmaster starts automatically when the world runs; there’s no item to craft or command to use. Check the boss bar at the top of your screen for the shared challenge, your personal progress, and the countdown. Complete the objective before time runs out to earn a reward.

Everyone works on the same objective, but progress is tracked separately for each player. Try the task as soon as it appears—most rounds last five minutes.

Overview

Challenges are chosen at random and normally roll over every five minutes. If all active players finish early, the round ends after a one-minute warning. At the rollover, players who completed the task receive a reward; players who did not face a random punishment.

The first challenge begins when the world starts running. Once any player has reached the Nether, Nether-related challenges can also be selected.

What It Adds

The mod adds a rotating challenge system, a boss-bar progress display, and rewards or punishments at the end of each round. Challenges ask you to move, jump, gather items, break or place blocks, stand on a particular block, change dimensions, or defeat mobs.

How To Use

Use the boss bar to check the current objective, progress, and time remaining. Complete the listed action in-game; there are no special controls or tools.

  • Break and place tasks count the specified block.
  • Collect tasks count an increase in the required items in your inventory compared with the start of the round.
  • Stand tasks accumulate time while you stand on the named block.
  • Travel tasks count horizontal distance in the same dimension.
  • Jump, dimension, and mob tasks count the specified jumps, dimension changes, or defeated mobs.

Challenges

AvailabilityPossible objectives
From the startJump 12 or 25 times; travel 160 or 300 blocks; break 12 stone, 16 dirt, 8 oak logs, 12 sand, 6 coal ore, or 5 deepslate iron ore; place 8 oak planks, 12 cobblestone, or 8 glass; stand on grass or sand for 15 seconds; gather 12 torches, 16 cobblestone, 8 wheat seeds, 8 arrows, 5 iron ingots, or 3 bread; cross between dimensions twice; defeat 2 zombies, 2 skeletons, or 2 spiders.
After the Nether is unlockedBreak 12 netherrack or 10 basalt; gather 10 nether quartz or 8 glowstone dust; defeat a blaze; stand on netherrack for 15 seconds; place 6 netherrack.

Rewards And Punishments

Completing a challenge gives you a random result at the round rollover:

  • 20% chance: No extra reward.
  • 40% chance: Two minutes of Speed or Regeneration.
  • 40% chance: A prize of 1 Totem of Undying, 1 Enchanted Golden Apple, 3 diamonds, or 4 ender pearls. If your inventory is full, the prize drops nearby.

Failing a challenge brings one of five equally likely punishments: immediate death, the loss of up to two inventory items, Poison, Slowness, or a delayed execution. Poison and Slowness last two or four minutes; the delayed execution can strike without warning.

Progression And Strategy

Keep an eye on the countdown and start gathering or traveling early, especially when a task requires reaching a particular dimension or finding a specific block or mob. For collect tasks, items already in your inventory at the start of the round do not count toward the required increase. In multiplayer, completing your own objective does not complete it for anyone else.
