The Midnight Mind transforms every Minecraft night into a tense horror survival loop. A live sanity meter constantly measures your mental state, draining when you are in darkness, under the open sky, making noise, or standing near the mod's monsters. Let it fall too low and hallucinations begin — whispers, flickering torches, and doors that move on their own. Manage your sanity, trade wisely during the day, and use every tool at your disposal to survive until sunrise.

When sanity runs critically low, hallucinations kick in — audio disturbances, flickering lights, and environmental scares intensify. Prioritise restoring sanity before it bottoms out.
The Listener tracks sound. To avoid or escape it:
When you trigger it, the chase theme begins playing — treat it as an alarm and go quiet immediately.
Rot-Speakers only appear during the day and will not attack you. Approach one and trade Rotten Flesh to receive:
Stock up on Rotten Flesh (from zombies the previous night) and spend your days trading to prepare for the next nightfall.
Carry the Nightmare Charm in your inventory and it acts as an automatic one-time shield — if a hit would kill you, the charm absorbs the damage instead. Obtain a replacement from a Rot-Speaker before the next night.
Very rarely during the night a bright portal will spontaneously open. Walking into it or being near it when it activates will purge all hostile mobs in the vicinity and give you a short window of relative safety. These are uncommon and unpredictable — treat them as a lucky rescue rather than a reliable strategy.
Early nights — prioritise sleeping through the night entirely. Collect Rotten Flesh each morning from zombie drops and trade it all to a Rot-Speaker. Stockpile at least one Nightmare Charm and several Warding Candles before attempting to stay up past midnight.
Mid progression — establish a base lit entirely with Warding Candles. Build wool walls or rooms as sound-dampening refuges. Keep a Safe Bell on your hotbar for emergency crowd control.
Underground play — always bring Warding Candles instead of torches into deep caves. The Hollow Miner can strip a tunnel of torchlight in seconds; Warding Candles give you light plus sanity protection.
Noise discipline — sprinting, attacking, and block-breaking all raise your noise profile and attract the Listener. Plan your actions and sneak whenever you hear the chase theme begin.
Moon Dust economy — Moon Dust dropped at sunrise by Moon-Crawlers may be used in future trades or crafting. Patrol your base at dawn to collect it before it despairs.
