Item Sorter
Quickstart
- Get the mob — Find an Item Sorter Spawn Egg in the Spawn Eggs creative tab and use it on the ground, or build the summoning structure (see below).
- Open its inventory — Right-click the Item Sorter to open its 27-slot chest-like inventory.
- Place items in — Put any survival items into the slots, then close the screen.
- Watch it sort — The Item Sorter immediately begins a ~2-second animated sorting routine, transforming every filled slot into a different valid survival item while keeping the same stack sizes.
- Collect your loot — Right-click again once it finishes to retrieve the newly sorted items.
Overview
The Item Sorter is a headless, iron-golem-sized creature that acts as a living loot randomiser. Right-click it to deposit items, close the screen, and it converts each stack into a different valid survival item — same size, new item. It is generally peaceful, makes chest-like sounds, and wanders calmly underground. It will not be targeted by other mobs the way an iron golem would be.
What It Adds
| Content | Description |
|---|
| Item Sorter (mob) | Headless golem-like creature with a 27-slot inventory that randomises items |
| Item Sorter Spawn Egg | Spawns an Item Sorter; found in the Spawn Eggs creative tab |
How To Use
Using the Inventory
- Right-click an Item Sorter (while it is not sorting) to open its 27-slot inventory.
- Place any items you want transformed into the slots.
- Close the screen to trigger the sorting routine.
- The Item Sorter animates for about 2 seconds, then stops. Right-click again to collect results.
Sorting Rules
- Each non-empty slot is replaced with a different valid survival item.
- Stack sizes are preserved — a stack of 32 becomes a stack of 32 of the new item.
- Spawn eggs and the original item itself are never chosen as replacements.
- Banned/creative-only blocks (command blocks, bedrock, structure blocks, etc.) will never appear as results.
Calming a Hostile Item Sorter
If an Item Sorter has been provoked, place any flower into its inventory and close the screen. It will consume the flower and return to its peaceful state.
Crafting And Obtaining
Natural Spawning
Item Sorters spawn rarely in the overworld underground:
- Below Y 55
- In low light levels (light level 7 or below)
- Near dungeon spawners
They are uncommon — don't count on finding one by simply exploring.
Spawn Egg
Use the Item Sorter Spawn Egg (available in the Spawn Eggs creative tab) on any surface to immediately spawn an Item Sorter.
Summoning Structure
You can construct a structure to naturally summon an Item Sorter without a spawn egg:
- Place two hoppers side by side.
- Place a double chest directly on top of the two hoppers (one chest block above each hopper).
- Place sticky pistons adjacent to the structure as required.
When the structure is detected, the hoppers and pistons are consumed and an Item Sorter spawns in their place.
Abilities And Mechanics
| Stat | Value |
|---|
| Health | 180 HP |
| Attack Damage | 12 |
| Movement Speed | Slow wander |
| XP on death | 5 |
Behavior
- Peaceful by default — wanders, looks at nearby players, does not attack unprovoked.
- Reacts to sound — notices nearby disturbances and investigates.
- Hostile when attacked — will turn aggressive if hurt. Has a hearing range of ~24 blocks and an attack range of ~2 blocks.
- Creative mode immunity — completely ignores players in Creative mode; if it somehow becomes hostile toward a Creative player, it immediately calms down.
- Not an iron golem to other mobs — no mob will target or react to the Item Sorter as if it were an iron golem.
Sounds
Makes chest-like sounds, including a locked-chest sound when it attacks.
Death Drops
Killing an Item Sorter may drop one of the following:
- Chest
- Sticky Piston
- Iron Block
- Hopper
Progression And Strategy
- Early game: Use the summoning structure (double chest + hoppers + sticky pistons) to get an Item Sorter without a spawn egg. Set it up in a base to act as a randomised loot generator.
- Feeding it efficiently: Fill all 27 slots before closing the inventory to maximise each sorting cycle. Stack sizes are preserved, so bulk materials yield bulk results.
- Calming it safely: If you accidentally provoke one, drop a flower into its inventory rather than fighting it — it has 180 HP and deals 12 damage per hit.
- Farming drops: If you choose to kill one, it drops useful redstone/building materials (chests, hoppers, sticky pistons, iron blocks), making it a moderate combat challenge with practical rewards.
- Keep it safe: The Item Sorter will not be attacked by hostile mobs targeting it as an iron golem, so it can coexist in your base without drawing unwanted aggression.
