Description

This mod adds the Hollow Miner Shade, a tall and thin shadowy entity that haunts underground caves and the darkness of night. This eerie creature mimics the sounds of mining to deceive players into thinking someone is digging nearby, while it silently stalks through the darkness extinguishing any torches it finds within range. The Hollow Miner Shade is hostile and will attack players on sight, making it a dangerous threat that combines psychological horror with direct combat as it plunges your surroundings into darkness.

Mod Wiki

Hollow Miner Shade

Quickstart

  1. The Hollow Miner Shade spawns naturally underground (below Y=50) and on the surface at night across the Overworld — no crafting required to encounter one.
  2. To spawn one manually, find the Hollow Miner Shade Spawn Egg in the Spawn Eggs creative inventory tab and right-click it on the ground.
  3. Head into a cave at night, place some torches, and listen carefully — if you start hearing stone-breaking and gravel-scraping sounds with no visible source, a Hollow Miner Shade is likely nearby.
  4. Keep your distance or come prepared: it is hostile, hits hard, and will snuff out your torches as it closes in.

Overview

Hollow Miner Shade is a horror-themed mob mod that introduces a single, unsettling enemy: a tall, gaunt shadow figure that haunts the underground and the night. It combines psychological deception with active environmental sabotage and direct combat, making caves feel genuinely threatening. It mimics the sounds of a miner at work, lures you deeper into the dark, and then systematically destroys your light sources before attacking.

Abilities And Mechanics

Mining Sound Mimicry

Every 3–9 seconds while active, the Hollow Miner Shade plays sounds identical to stone, gravel, and deepslate being broken and struck nearby. These sounds are indistinguishable from a player digging — the intent is to trick you into investigating or simply to keep you on edge. The sounds play from the mob's position, so the direction they come from is a clue if you pay attention.

Torch Extinguishing

Every 2–5 seconds, the Shade searches within a 6-block radius for any placed torch — regular torches, wall torches, soul torches, and soul wall torches are all targets. When it finds one, it silently destroys it and plays an extinguishing sound. Over time, a Shade will methodically strip away all your nearby light, leaving you in the dark.

Combat

The Hollow Miner Shade is a direct melee threat once it detects you. It will also retaliate if attacked first.

StatValue
Max Health30 ♥ (15 hearts)
Attack Damage4 ♥ (2 hearts) per hit
Movement SpeedSlightly faster than a standard zombie
Follow Range24 blocks
XP Dropped10

Unlike standard undead mobs, the Hollow Miner Shade does not burn in sunlight. However, it only activates its special abilities (mining sounds and torch destruction) when underground (below Y=50) or when it is nighttime on the surface. Outside those conditions, it remains passive in terms of its environmental tricks but will still pursue and attack you on sight.

Appearance

The Shade takes the form of a tall, narrow shadow figure — noticeably taller and thinner than a standard humanoid mob, with a very small ground shadow to reinforce its ghostly, barely-there presence.

Progression And Strategy

Preparation before caving:

  • Bring more torches than you think you need. The Shade will destroy them faster than you expect, especially if you linger.
  • Consider using lanterns, glowstone, sea lanterns, or other non-torch light sources, as the Shade only targets torches.
  • Bring ranged weapons. Engaging it from a distance before it can start extinguishing your lights is ideal.

Detection tips:

  • Unexpected stone-breaking or gravel sounds with no visual source is the primary warning sign.
  • Listen for the soft extinguish sound of a torch going out — that means the Shade is within 6 blocks of where it happened.
  • The Shade has a follow range of 24 blocks, so it can lock onto you well before you see it.

Combat:

  • At 30 HP the Shade is tankier than most early-game cave mobs. Bring swords or axes with decent enchantments.
  • Fighting in well-lit areas using lanterns or embedded light blocks will deny it the chance to plunge you into darkness mid-fight.
  • If torches are your only light and you notice them going out, back up and try to spot the Shade before engaging.
