Description
A bound lantern cannot be crafted or placed as a normal lantern block. To obtain one with commands:
/give @s forbidden-light-lantern-dpcfxav2:forbidden_light_lantern_dpcfxav2
The Forbidden Light Lantern is a single-use-per-stack supernatural utility item that grows more powerful—and more unsettling—the longer you carry it.
It has two related progression systems:
The lantern remembers its owner, carried time, awakening stage, enabled state, focus, and stored soul.
Hold an unbound lantern and crouch-use it.
Binding:
If you have 4 hearts or less, the lantern refuses to bind.
A lantern containing a soul has an item glint.
Use the bound lantern normally to toggle its light:
The lantern is enabled by default after binding.
Crouch-use a bound lantern to cycle through its four focuses. Changing focus also enables the lantern.
| Focus | Effects while enabled |
|---|---|
| Balanced | Night Vision, Darkness removal, Resistance, and Glowing on hostile mobs within 28 blocks |
| Revelation | Night Vision, Darkness removal, and Glowing on hostile mobs within 42 blocks; detects targets more frequently |
| Deepseeking | Night Vision, Darkness removal, Haste, and Glowing on hostile mobs within 28 blocks |
| Ward | Night Vision, Darkness removal, Resistance, and Glowing on hostile mobs within 18 blocks |
The lantern periodically highlights nearby hostile mobs with Glowing. It also removes the vanilla Darkness effect from you while its light is enabled.
When your health falls to 35% or less, the lantern warns you. In Ward focus, this warning also grants a short Absorption effect.
If incoming damage would kill you and the lantern with its stored soul is anywhere in your inventory, the soul shatters to save you.
The rescue:
The lantern remains bound after the soul is consumed, but it no longer protects you from another lethal hit until it is replaced by another binding process.
The lantern is available in the Tools Creative inventory tab.
In survival, it appears in the first simple dungeon chest opened on the server. Only one automatic dungeon placement occurs. If that chest has no empty slot, one of its existing slots may be replaced.
You can also obtain an unbound lantern with:
/give @s forbidden-light-lantern-dpcfxav2:forbidden_light_lantern_dpcfxav2
A bound lantern advances its carried-time counter once per second while it is in your inventory. You do not need to keep it enabled for this timer to advance.
Carrying time is retained when the lantern is toggled, moved between inventory slots, or returned after being lost.
Awakening is permanent for that bound lantern and is based on total carried time.
| Stage | Name | Reached after | Main effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Quiet | 0:00 | No awakening events |
| 1 | Remembering | 3:00 | Eerie ambience begins; music gradually fades; occasional unsettling steps and nearby hostile Glowing |
| 2 | Counting | 8:00 | Periodic exhaustion, nearby open doors may close, and nearby creeper explosions are prevented |
| 3 | Guiding | 18:00 | Periodic Speed, Glowing on nearby mobs, and directional haunting sounds |
| 4 | Crowding | 30:00 | More distant doors may close; the lantern may briefly inflict Darkness |
| 5 | Awake | 45:00 | Periodic Resistance for you, Speed for nearby hostiles, and stronger haunting messages and sounds |
Stage effects continue after reaching a stage and may occur repeatedly. Later stages retain the effects of earlier stages.
Once Stage 1 begins, eerie ambience fades in while normal music fades out. When the lantern is no longer being carried, the ambience fades away and music gradually returns.
From Stage 2 onward:
At Stage 4, the lantern may briefly give you Darkness, so do not assume every loss of visibility means the lantern has stopped working.
Stage 5 is not purely beneficial: nearby hostile mobs receive temporary Speed, making encounters more dangerous even as the lantern grants you brief Resistance.
Operators can enable the bottom-right awakening display with:
/gamerule forbiddenLightLanternDebugStages true
When enabled, the HUD shows:
Disable it with:
/gamerule forbiddenLightLanternDebugStages false
Operators with permission level 2 or higher can set a lantern’s awakening stage for themselves:
/FL <stage>
For another player:
/FL <stage> <player>
<stage> can be any number from 0 to 5. The target must have a lantern in their inventory.
