Demon Hunter Ascension
Quickstart
Craft a Demon Hunter Field Guide using the recipe below. Hold it and sneak-use (right-click while sneaking) to choose your profile; sneak-use again to cycle between male, female, and non-binary.
Use the guide on a villager or wandering trader to begin the story and receive a Nichirin Katana. Then keep the guide in your main hand or offhand while defeating hostile mobs so it can track your victories. After three kills, use the guide without sneaking to check your progress and activate your breathing technique.

Overview
The Field Guide tracks your profile, hostile foes defeated, rank, breathing form, campaign year, and story progress. Demons roam the Overworld, but any hostile mob you defeat counts toward your hunter’s progress.
What It Adds
- Demon Hunter Field Guide: Tracks your journey and unlocks breathing techniques.
- Nichirin Katana: A sword received through the guide’s villager story; it has 240 durability.
- Demons: Hostile Overworld mobs with 30 health and 4 attack damage.
How To Use
- Check your journey: Use the guide without sneaking to see your profile, rank, kill count, breathing form, year, and story. Once you have at least three kills, the same use also activates your current breathing technique if it is ready.
- Talk to villagers: Use the guide on a villager or wandering trader to advance its story. The first interaction grants a Nichirin Katana.
- Set the campaign start year: Carry the guide in your inventory and enter
/dha year <year>, with a year from 1 to 9999. The default start year is 1912; the displayed calendar advances with in-game time.
Abilities And Mechanics
Defeat hostile mobs while holding the guide in either hand to record kills. At three kills, breathing forms become usable. Each activation has a 30-second cooldown.
| Kills | Breathing form | Effect when activated |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Water | Speed I for 10 seconds |
| 8 | Flame | Strength I for 10 seconds |
| 15 | Wind | Speed I and Jump Boost I for 10 seconds |
| 28 | Thunder | Speed II for 10 seconds |
| 45 | Hashira Mastery | Speed II, Strength II, and Resistance I for 12 seconds |
Progression And Strategy
Ranks advance with hostile-mob kills:
| Rank | Kills |
|---|---|
| Mizunoto | 0 |
| Kanoto | 1 |
| Kanoe | 3 |
| Tsuchinoto | 6 |
| Tsuchinoe | 10 |
| Hinoto | 15 |
| Hinoe | 21 |
| Kinoto | 28 |
| Kinoe | 36 |
| Hashira | 45 |
The guide’s story summary moves from training and Final Selection to first missions at 3 kills, a Swordsmith Village journey at 21, and Hashira’s resolve at 45. If your katana breaks, use the guide on another villager to continue the story; if a village cannot be found nearby, explore farther and try again.
