Mod Wiki
Crystal Cave Companion Mod
Quickstart
- Find a companion in a dim, underground Overworld cave, or use its spawn egg. With cheats enabled, you can also summon one with
/summon com_crystal_cave_companion_mod_c5kylq5f:mycustom. - Hold an amethyst shard and interact with an untamed companion to try to tame it. Each attempt has a 35% chance to succeed.
- Once it is yours, feed it amethyst shards or amethyst clusters to heal and help it grow. Explore amethyst geodes together to help it mature.
- At growth stage 2, interact while holding an evolution item to choose a form. Use a stick to toggle between Stay and Follow.
Overview
The companion is a small, hovering crystal creature that can grow, evolve, help in combat, and accompany you underground. It grants nearby players Night Vision from time to time. It can also spot nearby amethyst formations as it explores, but it does not mine or break blocks.
What It Adds
- One tameable, flying companion with four growth stages and five evolutions.
- Automatic combat support once the companion matures.
- Amethyst detection and collection help for certain dropped items.
- A spawn egg, plus natural cave spawning.
How To Use
- Follow or stay: As its owner, interact with the companion while holding a stick. The prompt alternates between Stay and Follow. A companion ordered to stay will not follow or join combat.
- Heal and feed: Interact while holding an amethyst shard or cluster. Shards heal 3 health; clusters heal 8. Feeding also adds growth and energy.
- Fight together: From growth stage 2 onward, a following companion automatically attacks nearby monsters and creatures that attack or are attacked by you.
- Explore: From stage 1 onward, it periodically checks nearby blocks for budding amethyst, amethyst clusters, and large amethyst buds. Finding one grants growth; it does not harvest it.
- Collect drops: When near you, it can pick up dropped amethyst shards, amethyst clusters, and prismarine crystals and put them in your inventory, if there is room.
Crafting And Obtaining
Companions spawn in small groups of one or two in dark underground areas of the Overworld. You can also spawn one with its spawn egg or the summon command in Quickstart. No crafting recipe is listed for the companion.
Abilities And Mechanics
Growth stages are based on growth points:
| Stage | Growth |
|---|---|
| 1 | 15 |
| 2 | 45 |
| 3 | 80 |
Feeding grants 3 growth for an amethyst shard or 8 for a cluster. A following companion also gains growth gradually while near its owner, and can gain more by detecting amethyst formations.
At stage 2, interact with your companion while holding one of these items to choose an evolution. The item is consumed; you can use another evolution item later to change forms.
| Evolution item | Form | Notable effect |
|---|---|---|
| Amethyst block | Amethyst | Gains the evolved form and its close-range shard burst. |
| Obsidian | Obsidian | Deals stronger attacks and takes reduced damage. |
| Prismarine crystals | Prism | Can restore your health with its attacks and shield you when threats are nearby. |
| Sculk catalyst | Sculk | Gains the evolved form and its close-range shard burst. |
| Nether star | Rare | Deals the strongest attacks and takes reduced damage. |
Evolved forms other than Prism can unleash a shard burst against nearby monsters. The companion uses energy for combat abilities; feeding amethyst shards or clusters restores some energy. When you get separated or enter another dimension, a following companion may spend energy to teleport back to you.
Progression And Strategy
Tame a companion early, then keep it following you while you explore. Feed shards or clusters to speed up growth and keep its energy up. Once it reaches stage 2, choose an evolution to suit your needs: Prism offers extra protection, while Obsidian and Rare focus more on combat. Use Stay when you want to leave it somewhere safe, and switch back to Follow before setting out again.
