Description:
Burrow Trader is a Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5. It adds a single new mob — the Burrow Trader — a wild, disheveled villager-like wanderer who roams the Overworld, offers surprisingly useful trades in exchange for common junk, and then vanishes underground into a fully furnished hidden home that it digs and builds entirely on its own.
| Addition | Details |
|---|---|
| Burrow Trader mob | Entity ID: burrow-trader-mnggytm4:burrow_trader_mnggytm4 |
| Burrow Trader Spawn Egg | Item ID: burrow-trader-mnggytm4:burrow_trader_mnggytm4_spawn_egg |
The Burrow Trader looks like a villager but with a distinctly unsettling appearance: tattered clothing, dirty skin, and a bald head. It wanders the surface making ambient villager-like murmuring sounds, and it never despawns — once it appears, it is a permanent resident of your world.
Right-click (interact) a Burrow Trader while it is alive and adult to open its trading menu. It accepts cheap or unwanted materials and gives back genuinely useful items. All trades are fixed and listed below.
| Give (payment) | Receive | Max uses |

Trades refresh with use (the Burrow Trader has a small experience value attached to each trade).
Burrow Traders wander the Overworld surface. Because they never despawn and eventually seal their surface entrance after burrowing, you may need to watch for them before they go underground. You can also use the Burrow Trader Spawn Egg (available in Creative mode) to place one anywhere.
When above ground, the Burrow Trader wanders freely, escapes danger, watches nearby players, and — if another Burrow Trader is within about 18 blocks — will slowly move toward it and quietly murmur in a low villager voice. Multiple Burrow Traders in the same area will gravitate toward each other and tend to dig their homes in connected directions.
Periodically, a Burrow Trader begins digging. It carves a tunnel block by block, descending several blocks below the surface before continuing horizontally for a long distance (tunnels can reach 30–50+ blocks depending on terrain). It can dig through almost any normal block. If it hits an obstacle it cannot pass, it will try rerouting left, right, or backward to keep the tunnel going.
Community requirement: A Burrow Trader will only start or finish a burrow if its planned bed position falls within 11–22 blocks (horizontal) of another bed already in the world — whether placed by another Burrow Trader or found naturally. Spacing is measured bed-to-bed, not from trader bodies or room centres. If no qualifying bed exists nearby, the trader waits and retries instead of digging an isolated burrow. This means the first trader in a fresh area will not build until another bed (or a second trader's completed home) is within range — use spawn eggs or place a bed nearby to seed a community.
Once it reaches the end of the tunnel, the trader seals the surface entrance behind itself using dirt, hiding the shaft from view.
At the end of every completed tunnel, the Burrow Trader carves out an exact 11×11×11 chamber:
Inside the chamber, the trader furnishes its home:
Additionally, two smaller side rooms branch off the main chamber's flanks, connected by short passages.
Once the core furnishings are in place, the Burrow Trader enters a decoration phase, adding extra items to the chamber one at a time:
After finishing all decoration steps, the trader settles permanently near its completed home. It no longer starts new burrow cycles — instead it quietly wanders inside and around the finished chamber, returning if it strays too far.
Every Burrow Trader operates within a personal bed zone — a limited region anchored to the foot of its own bed. All digging and block placement is restricted to this zone; the trader will not touch any block outside it, ensuring two traders' homes never interfere with each other's construction.
Within that zone, the trader will not break or dig through its own bed, door, torches, crafting table, or barrel — nor the structural blocks forming their surrounding shelter. This means the home remains intact as the trader settles and wanders nearby.
Burrow Traders are completely persistent. They do not despawn at any distance and their tunneling and home state is saved across world reloads. Once a home is fully decorated, the trader stays there for good, wandering quietly nearby rather than seeking a new location.
There are no crafting recipes for the Burrow Trader spawn egg. It is available in the Creative inventory under spawn eggs. In Survival, you must find a Burrow Trader naturally in the Overworld.
