Quickstart

1. Craft the Bonebreaker Pickaxe using the recipe below — the recipe is unlocked automatically when you join a world, or find it in the Tools and Utilities creative tab.
2. Hold it in your main hand and mine normally, or hold Shift while breaking a block to instantly mine the full 3×3 area on that block's face.

Overview

The Bonebreaker Pickaxe is a bone-styled iron-tier pickaxe built for bulk excavation. Its standout feature is a 3×3 area-mine mode activated by holding Shift, letting you clear tunnels, flatten surfaces, or carve rooms far faster than any standard pickaxe. With a massive 10,000 durability, it lasts through enormous digging sessions without needing frequent repairs or replacements.

How To Use

Normal Mining

Use the Bonebreaker Pickaxe exactly like any other pickaxe. It mines all blocks that a standard iron pickaxe can, at iron-tier speed.

3×3 Area Mining (Shift-Mine)

• Hold Shift while breaking a block to activate area-mine mode.
• The pickaxe mines a 3×3 grid centered on the block you break, aligned to the face you are looking at.
  • Breaking a wall face mines a 3×3 patch of that wall.
  • Breaking a floor or ceiling mines a 3×3 patch of that horizontal surface.
• Only blocks the pickaxe is effective against are broken — other block types are left untouched.
• Unbreakable blocks (such as bedrock) are automatically skipped and will not stop the sweep.
• Each block broken in the area consumes durability normally, so a full 3×3 sweep can use up to 8 additional durability points per swing.

Craft the pickaxe with two Bones, one Iron Ingot, and two Sticks in the pattern shown:

The recipe is unlocked for all players automatically upon joining a world. The item can also be found in the Tools and Utilities creative tab.

Abilities And Mechanics

• Iron-tier mining: Can mine all blocks an iron pickaxe can (ores, stone, etc.).
• 10,000 durability: Dramatically outlasts standard iron tools (250 durability) and even diamond tools (1,561 durability).
• Shift-activated 3×3 sweep: Mines 8 surrounding blocks in addition to the targeted block, oriented to the face you are looking at. Release Shift to return to single-block mining at any time.
• Smart block filtering: The area sweep respects tool effectiveness — blocks the pickaxe cannot mine (wood, dirt, unbreakable blocks) are skipped entirely, protecting your tool and leaving unintended blocks intact.

Progression And Strategy

• Early tunneling: Craft the Bonebreaker Pickaxe as soon as you have iron and a couple of bones from skeletons. It immediately accelerates staircase mining and branch mining.
• Branch mining: Hold Shift to carve wide 3-block-tall corridors in a single pass — pair it with a shovel for clearing gravel or dirt pockets.
• Quarrying: Shift-mine on horizontal surfaces to strip large flat areas of stone quickly.
• Durability management: Even at 10,000 durability the 3×3 mode burns through charges faster; enchanting with Unbreaking or Mending extends its life further for very large projects.
• Precision work: Release Shift whenever you need single-block accuracy — the 3×3 mode is purely opt-in.
