Bedrock Storms And Tornadoes

Quickstart

  • To try it immediately: In Creative, search for Storm Beacon and take one. In the Overworld, hold it and use it. A thunderstorm begins, and a tornado funnel forms nearby after about 8 seconds.
  • Watch the action bar for the storm timer and funnel status. Keep clear of the funnel: it can pull entities in, lift them, and tear up some blocks.
  • In Survival: A storm can begin on its own. When it ends, players in the Overworld receive Stormglass, which is used to craft a Storm Beacon.

Overview

The mod brings thunderstorms and moving tornadoes to the Overworld. Storms last about 3 minutes; a tornado forms during the storm and lasts about 95 seconds. Tornadoes move across the terrain and can affect nearby players, mobs, and blocks.

Only one storm can be active at a time. Using a Storm Beacon during an active storm does not start another one.

What It Adds

ItemUse
Storm BeaconUse it in the Overworld to start a thunderstorm and call a nearby tornado.
StormglassA storm reward used to craft a Storm Beacon.

Tornadoes display their EF rating on the action bar. Some are Fire Tornadoes, which can ignite nearby flammable blocks.

How To Use

Use the Storm Beacon from your hand; it is not a block to place. Its storm and tornado effects work in the Overworld.

During an active storm, the action bar shows the remaining time and either Funnel forming or the tornado’s EF rating and type. Tornadoes pull and lift nearby entities, so move away from the funnel if you want to avoid being swept up. They also remove certain blocks near their path.

Crafting And Obtaining

Storms can begin naturally. When a storm ends, each player in the Overworld receives one Stormglass; if your inventory is full, it drops nearby.

Craft a Storm Beacon at a crafting table with iron ingots, redstone, an Ender Eye, and Stormglass:

Abilities And Mechanics

A tornado’s EF rating runs from 0 to 5. Higher ratings can damage tougher materials, as well as the weaker material groups below them.

EF ratingExamples of blocks it can remove
0Wool
1Wool and wood, including common wooden building pieces
2The above, plus stone, concrete, and terracotta
3The above, plus gravel
4The above, plus certain metal blocks and fittings
5The above, plus dirt, sand, and clay

Blocks outside these material groups are not removed by the tornado’s block damage. Fire Tornadoes can also start fires near flammable materials.

Progression And Strategy

Use natural storms to earn Stormglass, then craft a Beacon to start storms on demand. Before activating one, move valuables and vulnerable wooden or stone builds out of the tornado’s likely path. Keep watching the action bar: the funnel forms after the storm begins, and its EF rating indicates how much block damage to expect.
