User request: Item #: SCP-355-DE Object Class: Euclid Neutralized Close SCP-355-DE is stored inside a containment cell measuring 2.5 m x 2.5 m x 2.5 m within Site-DE4, which also features a bed and nightstand for testing purposes. An ordinary lamp is installed at the cell ceiling and a security camera above the door, which are activated when the motion detector is triggered. Staff members are prohibited from misusing SCP-355-DE for private recreational purposes or occupying the containment area without any reason and will be subject to disciplinary measures if they violate the regulations. Interfering with the alarm mechanism of the object is not permitted during experiments. Apart from Agent Joseph Jahn, no employee is allowed contact with PoI-355-DE, who must hold therapeutic conversations with the subject whenever it appears within the dreams of personnel. Agent Jahn has to repeat the memetics defense training class Ψ-3 every two months to negate the negative effects of SCP-355-DE. Special Containment Procedures: The remains of SCP-355-DE are to be stored inside a secure locker within the sector for neutralized anomalies in Site-DE4. Description: SCP-355-DE designates an analogue non-electrical alarm clock with a purple coloration and yellow imprinted stars on its body. A small golden bell is situated at the back on which the wooden stick attached at the top falls and thus produces a sound. The dial displays Roman numerals from I to XII as well as three clock hands in the style of those from Victorian times. The anomalous effect of the object only comes into force when a human subject places it in a five meter radius around his bed, sets a time for the alarm to go off1 and goes to sleep during that night. At this point, the subject will experience a lucid dream (SCP-355-DE-1) in which it traverses a world seemingly devoid of humans. A dark-blue fog is always reported as well. The subject s clothing will always equal their preferred outfit, independent from their current attire, while all objects worn by the subject at the time of falling asleep are also present within SCP-355-DE-1, but do not retain any changes created inside SCP-355-DE-1 within base reality. Neither hunger, nor thirst or fatigue seem to exist in SCP-355-DE-1. After waking up, which can only be initiated by the toll of SCP-355-DE, subjects feel very relaxed and mentally carefree for two to three hours, before negative psychological ailments manifest. Repeated and prolonged exposure to the effects of SCP-355-DE leads to different psychological issues, including a withdraw from society, misanthropy2, depression, depersonalization and derealisation. Staying mainly indoors leads often leads to a vitamin D deficiency, mal- or supernutrition and a worsening of the aforementioned psychological conditions.3 Without intervention, cases can end in suicide, but subjects seem to develop a kind of addiction to SCP-355-DE, as they state "it is the only thing bringing them pleasure now". During an unrestricted occupation of SCP-355-DE-1, neither the positive nor negative effects have an impact on the subject, but all psychological problems they already showed beforehand. PoI-355-DE is a middle-aged woman named Henriette Tracht who inhabits SCP-355-DE-1. She has long, straight dark-brown hair, a light skin color and is around 1.80 meter tall. Her clothing consists of a wide dark-green jacket, grey jeans and black boots. Moreover, she seems to have developed a post-traumatic stress disorder and thus misanthropic views, which is why she behaves rather dismissive of social interactions. Discovery: SCP-355-DE was discovered in the village [REDACTED] within the house of Ms. Tracht who, according to residents, had not been seen for a week. Police officials found her dead inside her bedroom and the cause of death was revealed to have been dehydration. In the nights thereafter, some residents reported to have been visited by Ms. Tracht within a dream featuring blue fog. Then the Foundation became attentive of the events and an investigation began, according to which Ms. Tracht was last seen alive in an antique shop buying an alarm clock. Interviews with the store owner revealed that he had no knowledge of the anomalous properties. Following an amnestizaton of the store owner, the object was seized within her bedroom and its anomalous properties confirmed. [-] Close Addendum/355-DE-01: Interview with PoI-355-DE Foreword: Upon the discovery of SCP-355-DE, Agent Jahn voluntiered to test the object's anomalous properties and laid down into the previously cleaned bed of Ms. Tracht. The following text was written by Agent Jahn in the aftermath. Agent Jahn sits on a bench at the shore. The sea is calm, forms no waves and roars softly while a gentle breeze blows. A blue mist colors the entire environment. Some minutes pass before a figure that looks very similar to Ms. Tracht approaches. She freezes at the sight of Agent Jahn. Ms. Tracht: Bu- but that's impossible. Agent Jahn: Good evening. Can I help you? Ms. Tracht: How did you get here? You're the first human I've met in ages. Agent Jahn: I believe it has something to do with your alarm clock. Calm down first and then I tell you everything. I just want to help you. Ms. Tracht: Oh well. I don't want to get home anyway. Ms. Trracht sits next to Agent Jahn and gazes out to the sea. Ms. Tracht: I assume my plan with the alarm clock has worked out? Agent Jahn: What plan? Ms. Tracht: I didn't want to wake up again, you know? Grew tired of that out there, with all that humans who bawl you out for the smallest inconvinience, all while frustrating three more people. Out there, I'm put down because society only approves of this and that. So I put a cork on the clock's bell one night and hoped to be here forever. Agent Jahn: I am afraid to inform you that you have died. Ms. Tracht opens her mouth, but then pauses. Some seconds pass. Ms. Tracht: I am not all too bothered by that. Nobody's going to miss me. Agent Jahn: What about your family? Or friends? There is always someone who is going to miss you. Ms. Tracht: Basically, you're only talking about my father. My mother died when I was still young. Next my father fell into a depression, attempting to drown his sorrows in alcohol. Sometimes, when I messed up, he got physical and … Ms. Tracht begins to cry and refuses to speak for a few minutes. Agent Jahn: You don't have to talk about it if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Ms. Tracht: No, it's alright. One day, I came by the local police station and told them everything. Then they took him away and put me into a youth center. Agent Jahn: Did it improve your situation? Ms. Tracht: Not really. The warden was still old school. Literally. The strong got a normal life like in kindergarten and the weak one under the belt. Oh, how I've hated her. Agent Jahn: I see. But you managed to escape eventually? Ms. Tracht: Yes, eventually a couple who came by took pity on me and adopted me. Things got a bit better, but I could never stand humans. Once I became old and self-sufficient enough, I moved out and have lived alone ever then. Agent Jahn: How hard was it for you to reintegrate into society after all that? There is silence for a few seconds. Ms. Tracht: Haven't succeeded to this day. Apart from the obligatory deeds like shopping and work, while I prefer remote work over the latter, I avoided society. Also, how many came to attend my funeral? Agent Jahn: Almost no one except the usual suspects. Ms. Tracht: I figured. Parents must have told their children to leave the old hag next door alone. I believe it turned out fine for everyone in the end. Agent Jahn: I believe that my time is about to run out soon and I have to return to work. But I can offer you some company, if you don't mind. Ms. Tracht: Yes, you're also the most human person I could talk to so far. Both gaze out to the sea for a few minutes. Before Agent Jahn wakes up, a small smile forms in Ms. Tracht's face. Afterword: Following this experiment, SCP-355-DE was confiscated and transported to Site-DE4, where it has been contained ever since. The youth home supervisor described by Ms. Tracht could not be punished, as she had already perished from old age. [-] Close Addendum/355-DE-02: Fifth Interview with PoI-355-DE Foreword: After Ms. Tracht was seen crouching and weeping in the dreams of several employees, Agent Jahn once again reported to talk with the subject. Ms. Tracht is sitting with red eyes on a bench by a field path, while the weeds are gently blowing in the wind. Agent Jahn sits down. Both look over field for around three minutes, before Ms. Tracht starts to speak. Ms. Tracht: Th- Thanks for coming. Agent Jahn: No worries. I know that everyone has to vent from time to time. Me too. Ms. Tracht: It became worse. Everything. I always see his before me. Agent Jahn: I can relate, especially since I will never be able to repress some faces from my military time. Soldiers never forget. Ms. Tracht becomes visibly uneasier and a tear rolls down her face. Agent Jahn: How is he showing himself to you? The setting, for example. Ms. Tracht: It was on a playground… on a meadow, I think. No other houses far and wide. And it was foggy. Agent Jahn: I see. Did he get rough there again out of some impulse? Ms. Tracht: He was his usual intoxicated self. And on a playground, too, but there was nobody to judge him. Nobody to save me from him. Agent Jahn: Can you name me the trigger that threw him off track? Frau Tracht: Yes… Ms. Tracht takes a deep breath and tries to collect herself. Ms. Tracht: I sat on a swing, smoked a ciggarete and tried to come clean with the world. There he snapped it out of my hand and screamed "I'm ashamed for you. For what you became!" That he hadn't brough me up like that. I stood up and shouted back that I have choosen my fate and he had brough his own addiction with him. There … Agent Jahn: Take your time. Some seconds pass. Ms. Tracht: Well, I guess you can figure out the rest yourself. So I fled to this place, far away from all possible influences. Here, there is nothing else than the wind. Agent Jahn: My condolences. But I can assure you that he is far away from us now and unable to cause you harm. Besides, I am always there, if … Frau Tracht: He isn't! Don't you understand! Agent Jahn looks at Ms. Tracht in confusion for a few minutes, before his eyes widen. Agent Jahn: What color was the fog? Frau Tracht: Blue. Afterword: Afterwards, Ms. Tracht was instructed by Agent Jahn to draw a sketch on a pad and memorized it. [-] Close Addendum/355-DE-03: Interrogation of Dr. Larch Foreword: Following the fifth interview of PoI-355-DE, Dr. Larch was detained and prepared for an interrogation with Agent Morn.4 It turned out that Dr. Larch had overwritten the safety barriers via his credentials and thus gained access to SCP-355-DE. Dr. Larch sits on a chair in an interrogation room. A table stands before him and behind it another chair. Agent Morn enters the room, sits down on the second table and places a few files on the table. Agent Morn: Good day, Mr. Tracht. Dr. Larch: Excuse me, you must be confusing me with someone else. I am Dr. Larch. Agent Morn: Believe me, there is much more at stake than a mistaken identity. Does the person in this picture mean anything to you? Agent Morn shoves a photo of Ms. Tracht to Dr. Larch. An abrupt motion can be seen in his right hand. Dr. Larch: No, doesn't ring a bell. Agent Morn: Alright, then. According to our records, you have been single and childless all your life. You gave your alcohol problems as a reason and began withdrawal. However, an alcohol content of 0.9 per mille was found in your blood. Can you tell me how you came to terminate your withdrawal? Dr. Larch: I couldn't quite process my last mission. A disease broke out in my home village, turning the victims' insides out and back every few seconds, while keeping them alive through anomalous means. The seats in our psychological wing were overcrowded and then there was that champagne bottle and I couldn't resist. Agent Morn touches his ear. Agent Morn: Sounds large-scale. According to my knowledge, we don't have any records of such an event. Besides, the seats within our psychological wing haven't been overcrowded in ages. I would like to know where you were the night before last? Dr. Larch: In my office where I recorded my findings concerning SCP-072-DE. Then I went to bed. Agent Morn: Now I feel sorry for the person you gave nightmares to. Dr. Larch becomes visibly tenser and more irritated. Agent Morn: Come on. We both know why they summoned you here. And a confession on your part would spare us a lot of time and nerves. Which also applies to your daughter. Dr. Larch: Okay, I used the alarm clock! Are you satisfied now? Agent Morn: Not quite. Are you even aware that your daughter suffers from severe depression and then banished herself by choice? Dr. Larch: It has always been clear to me that she would end up like this some day. Wasn't an ace in school either. If the boards are bleak, so will the house. Agent Morn: But maybe she is a chip off the old block. Dr. Larch suddenly stands up, but stands still upon the sound of a drawn gun.5 Agent Morn: I'm curious. What did you do after you got out? Dr.. Larch sits back down. Dr. Larch: I knew that people in the field of work wouldn't be so keen on taking me now. So I underwent several plastic surgeries, died my hair and changed my name. Agent Morn: Well, you couldn't decieve our DNA tests. You are hereby under arrest for the unauthorized usage of SCP-355-DE and the subsequent assault on Henriette Tracht. This interrogation is over. Afterword: Dr. Larch was subsequently demoted to D-class. [-] Close Addendum/355-DE-04: Tenth Interview with PoI-355-DE Foreword: This interview was niether conducted in response to dream projections by PoI-355-DE nor authorized. Agent Jahn entered SCP-355-DE-1 without supervision after stealing SCP-355-DE. The following text was discovered by Agent Morn during a dream and transcriped by within baseline reality. SCP-355-DE was destroyed via a mechanism consisting of a test tube with slowly dripping, corrosive liquid. Ms. Tracht is sitting before the glass wall inside the highest room of a skyscraper and is overlooking the city when Agent Jahn enters the room. Ms. Tracht: Joseph, I don't need anyone to talk to, but it's nice you come by. Agent Jahn: But I have to talk to someone. Agent Jahn sits down. Ms. Tracht: What's bothering you? Is my father involved? Agent Jahn: In a way, yes. He got interrogated. That bastard had plastic surgery and a new name, so that he can be part of society again without being recognized. I secretly watched the interview … If we had known that we had such a person within our ranks … Ms. Tracht: This isn't you fault. The world is packed with evil persons. Sometimes, you don't know who you're going to meet 'round the next corner. Agent Jahn: You're probably right. I wasn't allowed to interrogate him, because they considered me to be "too emotionally unstable". Admittedly, they were kinda in the right, given that I skipped two or three mental training sessions. Besides, I was worried about you. Ms. Tracht: I'm getting by for now; the voices couldn't tempt me so far. But now I am worried about you. Agent Jahn: I can't stand humans who blame all their problems on a sandbag and think it won't leave a mark. Ms. Tracht embraces Agent Jahn who sheds two tears. Agent Jahn: Look at this world out there. War, corruption and hatred everywhere you look, all while everyone just accepts it, saying that "life goes on". Ms. Tracht: It is not in our power to decide these things. Agent Jahn: Of course, but in this world we are far away from all those unpleasant characteristics. Here we are free. I don't want to go back. Ms. Tracht: But there are people out there who need you. People who are dependent on your help. Isn't worth living for? Agent Jahn: „Blessed are those poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“ That has always been my favorite quote from the bible. And by now I think it may actually be healthier to not know about all that crap. Ms. Tracht: But your time here is limited. What will you do when you wake up? Agent Jahn: I won't Frau Tracht: What?! Agent Jahn: I've made sure the alarm clock is slowly being corroded while I sleep. So that I can come to terms with the world. I have seen so many people die in horrible ways. I can't do that anymore. Ms. Tracht: On one hand, I am happy to not be alone anymore. Then again, there is nothing here worth living for either. Agent Jahn: I have you; that's enough. Ms. Tracht chuckles and hugs hum again. Afterword: Attempts to free Agent Jahn from his dormant state remained unsuccessful, with him perishing a week later. SCP-355-DE was reclassified to Neutralized. SCP-355-DE-1 is to be considered lifeless. Footnotes 1. Tests have shown that the alarm can only be set to a maximum of eight hours after operation. 2. Hate of humans 3. If changes within the hormone levels during the first two or three hours after exposure also contribute in an intensification is not confirmed. 4. Agent Jahn was refrained from leading the interrogation as he appared emotionally upset. 5. The pistol was only loaded with blanks and merely served to intimidate.'
